So Much For The Right To Freedom Of Speech

Much has been made of "Freedom of Speech" and "Freedom of Expression in light of the Charlie Hebdo attack. Yet we do not practice what we preach, it seems.

VICTORIA’S Health Minister has asked organisers of a conference featuring anti-vaccination speakers to reconsider their “irresponsible” event to protect children.

The March 1 conference covers topics such as “vaccination risks, benefits and alternatives”.

Oh and... before anyone starts... I am not anti-vaccine, but I do believe the risks are worth considering.

I believe in free speech, I think she has already had the opportunity of it, and scientists have denounced her opinion as being incorrect.

If she is given the opportunity to speak in at the conference, I believe Australian scientists and Medical Doctors will also denounce her opinion.

As is their perfect right - they will be exercising their own freedom of speech.

I take it you haven't heard the medical experts asking that this speaker not be given a visa to speak at vaccination forums as the views she promotes pose a public health risk by making false claims.

How do they know she's making false claims they haven't heard her speak? And if they're refusing her right to speak, what happened to freedom of speech?

I mean...in the Charlie Hebdo case, it was acknowledged the publisher was being inflammatory and putting innocent lives at risk. Yet freedom of speech in this case is being lauded.

Double standards?

Not only that but she profits from selling untested alternatives to vaccination.

Speaking of the right to freedom of speech. did you hear about the person who got arrested in Qld yesterday for wearing a "I'm with Stupid" Tshirt and standing with the LNP spruikers?   :D:D:D  They joined in and waved for photos until they realized they were the stupid, then phoned the police  :D:D:D

Do try not to let your mind wander too much and stay on topic pls, gleee :D:D:D

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, did you read what you wrote above?

Those in the medical profession who are putting forward the argument against her have heard her and read what she's written.  They don't care if she comes here, they're only against her spreading misinformation about vaccination and against the anti vaccination few demanding equal air time as the experts who rely on scientific research for the information they provide.

Doctors want to bar anti-vaccination campaigner Sherri Tenpenny

Australian Medical Association's Council of General Practice chairman Dr Brian Morton also supported the call for her to be blocked from entering, saying her views were inconsistent with overwhelming scientific evidence supporting vaccination.

"Sherri is one of the highest-profile anti-vaccine liars in the USA, and we should be sending a strong message to these loons that in Australia we rely on facts, science, and rational and considered opinion by people with expertise," Dr Cunningham said.

Dr Cunningham said her tour had been arranged by Stephanie Messenger, author of the controversial anti-vaccination children's book Melanie's marvellous measles.

"Stephanie is organising the tour through the Get Rid of SIDS Project Inc and the GanKinMan Foundation, which are both dubious organisations. The money paid for tickets is going straight into her pockets," Dr Cunningham said.

her interest is not in saving lives but in lining her own pockets, she should be shut down - kudos to those who are preventing her fear mongering.

So "freedom of speech" is just a hollow slogan?

so you think its ok for anybody to make up 'facts' to fleece money from vulnerable people?

well it must be a hollow slogan

take my example for instance....  why is it that those members of the press who are atm calling for a free press after the Charlie Hebdo murders are the same ones who chastized Mike carlton over a cartoon and caused him the loss of his job

I'm not questioning their right to vigorously refute her views, I'm questioning their right to deny her freedom of speech. Seeing we so value this right  in our country.
