that we all stopped commenting or passing judgement on posts or threads that we don't like?
eBay is a large and diverse community, There are always going to be some that like some things and some that don't.
So, as long as the post/thread is within eBay's guidleines, is it time to just let people post what and how they want?
Perhaps if you do find something offensive, how about PM'ing the person involved to politely explain your position instead of doing it in a manner that may cause humiliation.
*Disclaimer, the above option did not work very well for me, so in no way can I advise that this is the best option, but just a suggestion. LOL.

depending on how many and the tone I would report then.

Reporting them is a bit over the top.
Block them from sending you messages.
Go to your inbox in messages you can click on 'message settings' at the top and then you can add members that you want to block. They will no longer be able to send you messages in that way.

Yes, only have to read/belong to a few forums to work that out.
Thats right and on most forums you would be told in such a way that leaves no misunderstanding of what is expected and how to conduct yourself.
Its only the reporting system here that allows for such bad behavior to continue

Recently a good friend posted that she found a thread I had started distasteful, I was a bit surprised that she felt that way, but it was her honest opinion, I didn't feel the need to criticise or belittle her for holding it, and as far as I know it hasn't in any way affected our friendship. (waves and blows a kiss to *******) ,
What was Al from Happy Days catch phrase?
..... "Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah..." ChaCha!

Reporting over the top? Not in one or two particular cases when they do not take a the hint to stop. However your hint is a good one, maybe Az can use that feature.

What are some of the other reasons that posters use here to harangue a poster(s) relentlessly (not for just for weeks, or months but for years) whom they are targetting? There must be plenty of other reasons as it happens here often. Pot calling the kettle black.

I can't do that, the messages are not coming through here but in my ebay account, the message centre used between buyers/sellers?
