So shall we add human rights to the long list...

...of stuff ups made by the Abbott Government?

The government has appointed (without any recruitment process, merit considerations, interview and even without the GG approval which is the usual process) the anti Human Rights Commission advocate, Tim Wilson as the (and this is truly true) Australian Human Rights Commissioner.

In case you don't know who Wilson is, I can fill you in just a little -

  • has campaigned for years to have the AHRC disbanded. And lo and behold, here he is RUNNING it. Go figure.
  • right winged extremist who is obsessed with left winged so-called communist activities and thinks all Labor supporters have a communist hiding under their bed.
  • Thinks that health warnings on cigarettes are "nanny state" (his favourite term) politics
  • is a vehement 'free speech' advocate
  • yet for some reason believes that the family and associates of bikies should not have their 'rights' infringed upon by police wishing to interview them after a crime is committed.
  • Climate change talk is all a lie and the CT is a threat to our sovereignty

He is a prolific writer on all things right winged with ridiculous views. A good example is an article in the Australian last month titled: "Who's on first, gay black man or disabled Muslim woman?". The article itself isn't worth reading as it is full of garbage but I think you can get the general gist of this guys attitude from the title.

And his first published article after the appointment? Did it mention human rights for our indigenous people? Or our disabled people? Or asylum seekers being held in detention centres? Nope. He mentioned 2 specific bugbears of his - firstly, that the police have no right to interview family members of bikies and secondly, the innappropriateness of unions (an allegation only BTW) to donate to the cause of same sex marriage.

This person is now head of human rights in Australia.

Don't police interview/speak with lots of people after any serious crime has been committed, neighbours, work mates, family members? For the Allison Baden Clay case they took around 300 statements.

I'd expect that the police had a right to question me about any crime  I may be able to assist them with ...even if it's just as a witness to ask and then verifying where my friend/family member was if I knew .

Although where very bad gangs are concerned any one giving info or even being question may be at risk for doing so.

how is this a bad thing?  Are they not Australian citizens with the same rights as any other Australian citizens?

Wouldn't you kick up a stink if your rights were infringed upon because a friend or family member allegedly committed a crime?

A friend of mines husband was hired by a mate to do some roofing on another guys house.

He did the job not realising the guy whos house it was was a bikie member.

A year later he was pulled over and questioned by police regarding another matter as he was classed as an associate of the bikie guy.

He didnt even meet the guy

Umm but newstart, none of those things have actually happened. Not sure what country you live in, but in Australia unemployment is rising, boats are still arriving, the taxes haven't been abolished. Gawd.

1. Shouldn't there be repercussions for Brandis appointing Wilson without going through the proper process?

2.  Wilson will be known as the Freedom Commisioner (!)

Senator Brandis said the Coalition had pledged to create at least one "Freedom Commissioner", adding he had asked Mr Wilson to focus on freedom of expression rights recognised by Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He flagged reforms to the Commission would be made in the new year.

The appointment will be for five years.

Invent names for comissioners?

This is the same Tim who believes protestors should be hit with 'water cannons'?

Sounds like a freedom lover to me.

I guess if he is a homosexual any question of his ability to care about everyone's freedoms, will be an attack on  his sexual preference

Hopefully he will give  the Gay trans and Bi people of Australia the good news that Abbott will allow a consciounce  vote on gay marriage and the freedom of being able to marry like every other Australian citizen will one day be a reality.

We should make someone from Rio Tinto the commissioner for the enviroment.
