So where are the Sri Lankans?

These people disappear off the face of the earth and we are given no clue as to whether they are safe or dead or back in India or sent to their death in Sri Lanka?

And aside from the ABC and the SMH, there hase been barely a murmur by the Australian public.

Have we completely lost our compassion??

Re: So where are the Sri Lankans?

Report of the Expert Panel on Asylum Seekers, August 2012 p.81

Attachment 3: Australia’s International law obligations with respect to refugees and asylum seekers :

International human rights law

Non-refoulement

australia has obligations under the

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Iccpr) and the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment not to return a person to a country where he/she would be at a real risk of irreparable harm by way of arbitrary deprivation of life or application of the death penalty, torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Where

non-refoulement concerns arise, an assessment of the real risk of harm must take into account all the circumstances of the particular case. These could include: the personal risk faced by the claimant; the human rights record of the relevant country; and, if relevant, the content and credibility of any agreements or assurances as to treatment.

australia’s

non-refoulement obligations under international human rights law exist regardless

of whether a person is entitled to

non-refoulement protection under the refugees convention.

 ....p.83...

Law of the sea

Australia’s obligations that relate to the interdiction of a suspected irregular entry vessel (SIEV), the rescue of persons at sea and safety of life at sea (in addition to any obligations under international human rights law and the refugees convention) arise from:

    • United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS);

    • International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR Convention); and
    • International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention).

.....reckon there have been a few breaches, that's my opinion

nero, when you copy and paste can you at least ensure that the font is large enough to read without my aging eyes squinting and having to up the zoom on my browser to close to 200 percent.

If you don't know how to do that you simply highlight the text you've pasted, select a font and font size that is readable (12 point is just fine and dandy) and it's done.

It would be appreciated so very, very much.

Is that the poll that comes after the title paragraph that says:

None of the Tamil asylum seekers handed back to Sri Lankan authorities at sea is in danger of persecution, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says.

Not influencing the poll much eh?

I find it fascinating that some people are so joyful about other people being sent back to a country in which they have been and are likely again to be tortured.  I can't comprehend how anyone could celebrate the abuse of other people.  To what seems like the online version of dancing with joy over the misfortune of others.  I can only imagine if they were from a primative country they would be in the front row at the stonings.

Re: So where are the Sri Lankans?

I think there is a very importnt issue being overlooked here - and one that has nothing specifically  to do with refugees.

If a Government refuses to tell the people it reperesents how it is implementing its policies how can they ever know it is not lying to us?

When Abbott says "We have a right to decide who comes to this country," which WE is he referring to - the Australian people or a handful of politicins?

It may be that IF  the Australian people actually knew who these asylum seekers were, they would not want them here; but since we have no reliable information whatsoever about them or their circumstances and only know of their assumed existence thanks to .the news media, how can we possibly make an informed decision?

Trust me I'm a politician? I don't think so.
