The Australian government, in its formal assessment of Sri Lankaโs human rights, presented by DFAT to the United Nations in 2012, says Sri Lanka is responsible for government-sponsored abuse, torture and mistreatment by police and security forces.
This assessment continues to be part of the current assessment on Sri Lanka's human rights.
Fairfax and other media organisations, as well as Human Rights Watch, the Human Rights Law Centre, the Asian Human Rights Law Centre, have documented instances of returned asylum seekers being tortured by police and the military.
