These people disappear off the face of the earth and we are given no clue as to whether they are safe or dead or back in India or sent to their death in Sri Lanka?
And aside from the ABC and the SMH, there hase been barely a murmur by the Australian public.
Have we completely lost our compassion??

Wonder why Scott Morrison refuses to comment or disprove claims of a second boat, carrying 150 people, including women and children?

just so those who don't support the governments deplorable actions don't feel alone.....below is from the Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce who have a report from the Human Rights Law Centre on their web site...among other things...
Recent data on boat arrivals indicates that a majority of Sri Lankans who flee are asylum seekers. Although notionally aimed at combating people smuggling, Australia’s efforts at ‘stopping boats’ are jeopardising the ability of Sri Lankans at risk of persecution to gain access to safety and asylum. These risks are compounded by Australia’s domestic policy of forcibly returning Sri Lankan boat arrivals in Australia without conducting proper assessments as to their refugee status or monitoring their safety on return.
Australia’s public accountability, transparency and risk management around this work is hopelessly deficient, depriving the Australian public of the ability to understand the Australian Government’s activities in this area and increasing the risks that the
Australian Government is supporting activities that violate human rights. The overall impact of this work seriously diminishes Australia’s standing in the international community, undermining Australia’s ability to promote good governance, human rights
and security in our region and beyond.

from the New York Times...
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/05/opinion/australias-refugee-problem.html?_r=0
Australia is pursuing draconian measures to deter people without visas from entering the country by boat. In doing so, it is failing in its obligation under international accords to protect refugees fleeing persecution.
But there is something about the boat people that has provided politicians with an exploitable issue that does Australia’s otherwise commendable record on refugees no good.

great letters in WA Today, this is one of them....
Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser has said that handing over refugees at sea to the country which caused them to risk their lives to escape its persecution is akin to handing over Jews to Nazi Germany. I never thought I would write a letter in support of Fraser, but I am.
The policy of Tony Abbott (my esteemed local member) and Scott Morrison on asylum-seekers has passed being immoral and heartless. Now it's downright wicked.
Once again, it should be pointed out that there is no such thing as an illegal asylum-seeker. Asylum-seekers, under UN conventions to which Australia is a signatory, are legally allowed to seek asylum wherever they want.
Added to that, the government's refusal to speak to the media about "on-water" events is cynical in the extreme. If the media were able to let the public know what the government is doing to asylum-seekers, the government’s precious western Sydney votes may well dry up. In any democracy, a free media is essential. Once a government decides to curtail the freedom of the media to report on everything they do, it's a very slippery slope.
