the first photo - are those 2 windows in separate rooms or the same room? If separate then there is a wall between the two - looks like hole is right over the dividing wall?
You see what I mean about the battens and in that photo there's even a steel brace in the way - would have to be a small person. I guess there are all sorts of possibilities but looks like whoever it was didn't know much about roof structures.
It could have been someone playing a trick - like putting an animal / snake or even some sort of recording device etc in your roof and they were disturbed before they had time to put the roof tiles back.

my bedroom underneath
Check the ceiling for small holes.......

Your bedroom. Okay. 😞
This may explain why they took a big risk to remove tiles at the front of the house in view of the street. Because they wanted access to your bedroom. Kylie don't be scared because I think it's your ex. He could be wanting to 'catch' you out with other men. Maybe he was going to drill a hole in the ceiling and place some kind of surveillance camera/voice activated recorder there.

Wow... The thing is once someone is inside they would just go out the front door, they wouldn't climb back up and go out the roof which is why I guess the tiles are still there. Of course they may not have gone in, just looked/listened.
I think like cat says it being above your room is very telling.

Kylie, a similar thing happened to an old pensioner friend of ours - though God knows why anyone with an ounce of intelligence would go to all that trouble to break into a villa in a complex of social housing pensioner apartments.
Fortunately they didn't get into the house itself. What saved him - and may have saved you as well - was that the roof was insulated, making it impossible to tell where the manhole cover was.

Couldn't it have been something hitting the roof, like a football? Do kids play football out the front or anything like that?

If they had blown off or been vibrated out I doubt they'd be stacked?
They could be. Tiles have a lip on them to latch them on. So if the top one slides, it slides over the the one underneath effectively stacking them.
Not that I am saying this could be it but I still find it difficult to believe that the ex would go to all that trouble. Plus I assume your neighbours know him so he would easily be identified if seen. Would he really risk getting caught while he was so exposed?
He is either really, REALLY dumb or there is a less serious explanation.
And I doubt if it's a thief - they would choose a less visible entry point.

I doubt anyone actually got into the roof, as Rabbit said there is metal cross bracing directly in the way. Maybe once they realised it was not as simple as just slipping into the roof cavity they thought better of it. I think the idea of security cam is a good one because I too suspect your ex may have had a hand in this.
As for thieves being blatant enough to remove tiles from the front of the house, it has happened in my area.
Two blokes driving a van parked in the driveway of a house and put up a ladder and removed roofing. They were dressed as tradesman. One entered, opened the front door for the other, and they loaded household stuff into the van. Neighbours did notice them, but assumed they were working on the roof, and could not even describe them.

now, this may be a little weird, and please forgive me for asking this but, you haven't had any tradies around lately looking at problems like plumbing or electrical ? Or anyone doing quotes for something? Who may have taken a few tiles off to inspect something and forgotten to put them back???

Neighbours would have noticed before though?
The bracing does not cover the whole roof, perhaps someone looking to see if they could get in?
