Sperm donors children. How many are related?

This is a wonderful, but disturbing story.

What if a young man and a young woman fall in love because of the mutual interests and attraction and finish up getting married, without knowing that they are brother and sister?

This has worried me since I learned that a sperm donor can donate hundreds of sperms for IVF use.

What do others think?

I think probably minimal. The main concern with half siblings would be potential genetic diseases or defects. I think this is usually ruled out in testing  before being used?

It happens in the general population too, when men are promiscuous and have fathered multiple children.

I am with you Lind, I often wonder with a sperm donor who gives to many woman no one can rule out that half siblings may never meet up.

I read that story about the uni girls the other day, I wonder how often that happens, could happen alot for all we know, it is only if they go to the papers, that we would hear about it.

Most countries claim a limitation of donations, but a lot have not been recorded. For instance in the USA,

The ASRM guidelines limit a donor to 25 live births per population area of 850,000,[16] although this is not enforced by law, there is no central tracking, and it has been estimated that only about 40% of births are reported. It is likely that some donors have over one hundred genetic children.

And if you google; "How many children by one sperm donor?" You will be blown away by the number of more than 100.

Yes, a male may play around and produce several children by everal women, but they are usually recorded on Birth Certificates and at the Registry for Birth, Death and Marriages, and easily traceable.

Not really, a man has to agree to have his name recorded on a birth certificate for that to happen. I personally know of several people who have a father's details recorded but they are not the father. It used to be considered that the man the mother is married to is the father.

I did google it recently and couldnt believe the number of children some men have due to sperm donation.

I also read and I dont know where, that some countries in the world now limit the number of donations any one man can do.

It would have been in an online newspaper, but I read so many from all over the world, cant remember which one.
