AFTER attracting the gaze of thousands of beachgoers – and the “likes’’ of tens of thousands of readers on PerthNow’s Facebook page – the giant seal sunning itself at Sorrento has a name.
From a short-list of Louseal, Alex, Sammy and Nelly, PerthNow readers have voted that the two-tonne southern elephant seal be named Steven Sealberg.
The elephant seal swam to shore on Wednesday and has been unperturbed by all the attention it has received from visitors day and night.
The star attraction of Sorrento Beach is still resting up and drawing daily crowds by the hundreds.
The 2000kg mammal is even causing traffic woes, with families reportedly parking illegally to see the seal.
Meanwhile, wildlife officers were stunned to see video of a Perth man slapping the rear of the seal.
It prompted a warning for the public to stay away from the unpredictable animal and a fence erected to avoid people coming too close.
Sunbathing and snoozing on Sorrento Beach, the young male quickly became a popular attraction for beachgoers and drew crowds to the northern suburbs beach.
The seal even has his own Twitter account, which has already amassed more than 500 followers. and updated to include his newly-christened name
