Storage Capacity of 20Ft Sea Container

Does anyone know how much you can fit into a 20ft sea container? We not only have lots of furniture, but loads of boxes too, plus garden and garage stuff.

Moving in 3-4 weeks from Sydney to Brissie, and a friend of my son's has offered to store our stuff in his sea container.

We had a look at it in January, but I've been worrying that it won't be big enough. We have a 3 bedroom house with rumpus. Garden shed, double garage.  

Apparently they  do hold about 1158 cubic feet, but I have no idea what that amounts to......!!

A room 12 ft x 12 ft and 8 ft high is 6 sq ft short of the container size.

Grapes ..kids had their stuff stored in a 20 ft container ..5 bedroom and a rumpus room
Outdoor furniture and garage stuff .all fitted .packed to the roof tho .

We had our household stuff stored by a removalist for a short time in a container ( i presume a 20ft one). It was full, packed well by thevremovalists. I think we would have a bit less stuff than you have.

Used to get 690 x 27.2 kg (18768kgs) cartons in a 20 footer.

The cartons dimensions were 520mm x 167mm x 340mm.

You need to make sure you have flat ground when you load and unload (or at least use blocks of wood to make the

corners square) or you cant get the doors opened/closed because the box will twist a little out of shape.

If the storage period is longer (even if the container is airtight) then protect anything that can rust otherwise you will be

in for a rude shock upon unpacking.

The containers generally sold cheap are out of date deck containers ie they can no longer be used for commercial

shipping purposes.

No matter how much you clean them an element of salt remains impregnated.


Giving the outer roof a good hosing before you load to check for leaks...even if it is sold as a dry container... will also save tears later on

I forgot to add a 20ft container is 20ft on the outside not the inside. Becausee of the weave of the wall metal the internal

dimensions are around 19' 5". High cube Australian containers are a little higher than overseas made containers. This site
