Struggle Street

so, who's watching this show tonight at 8:30 on SBS?

if it's not cancelled that is. The people involved have tried to get it wiped because it represents them in an unfavourable light.

Re: Struggle Street

Actually  just watched the first part again, the lady with kids sat on the park bench at the begining said its 400 bucks a week to live there in rent if I heard correctly.  The man also clearly said he has around 200 a f/n for food then later about 110 a week. It's actually worth watching again for the bits you miss.

You must have heard it wrong or he's telling porkies - $400 a week is WAY above what HC rents are - especially for Invalid Pensioners - more like $40 a week - PLUS they would probably also get rent assistance.  No, I think there is an element of 'poetic licence' involved.

just taking the husband's and wife's pensions at lowest rate = $660 + $660 fortnight - that's $660 per week, so where does the other $550 a week go to? Certainly not on rent.

Why do you think that $550 would not be going on rent plus utilities, and maybe some repayments of loans/CCs?  Easily, if you consider car (rego, running costs, insurance) plus electricity, water gas ...........

Did they have a car? Even if they did, I think Insurance would be considered an unnecessary item.

Maybe you missed my previous post - we live on exactly the same amount as they would be getting - ie 2 x $660 pensions. Well, actually with 10 kids they would be getting a LOT more than us.

If they are public housing tenants they do not get rent assistance and would pay between 25 and 30% of their incomes in rent.

You are talking about ordinary Public Housing tenants - NOT Invalid Pensioners. In any case, assuming they pay full rent it's still only $175-200 - not $400.

Anyway, I'm fed up with talking to myself, so I'm going shopping now.   Oh! That's right! We haven't got any money left until next Thursday  - I spent it all at the Pub last night on Booze, drugs and Poker Machines. Could someone feel sorry for me or I might have to resort to collecting scrap metal to buy my grandchildren some food..

Re: Struggle Street

Don't get me wrong. There are people in a lot worse situations and cannot afford to feed and cloth themselves. I know there are people living in atrocious conditions - that haven't even got a roof over their heads. THEY are the ones I feel sorry for especially when there are other people living in 4 and 5 bedroom HC homes with 3 or 4 empty bedrooms.

After re-watching sections I have interpreted:

The young mother in the park said 400 bucks a week to live there  (to have house broken into, things stolen, and so on.)

Peta is Ashley's second wife

10 children between them - 18? grandchildren between them

Another problem they have is Cory - Stealing household items (including Peta's Tupperware Sellers Kit) lawnmower, etc to feed his habit.

Probably trying to get Cory put away to help her mother's predicament, Ashley's step-daughter brings her"boyfriend/undercovercop" who asked about drugs in the house, with Ashley admitting he had some and must have given some to the boyfriend [on at least 3 occasions].

With the house being raided, Ashley was charged with supplying drugs to an undercover operative - 12 months gaol.

Peta 12 months gaoled for "knowing....."

The filming was stopped after she was visibly upset when she recalled the look on her children's faces when being escorted away by police at the time of arrest.

Re: Struggle Street

I just watched the start again ... I'll watch the rest later - but it sounds like that girl on the park bench says "1200 bucks a week to live in Mt Druit" - I tried to listen several times - can someone let me know what she actually says please.

Who is she anyway? Does she live in Mt Druit? Is she part of the show - ie more details?

Tatoos. I notice a few of them in the prelude. Now there's a worthwhile investment. How much welfare has gone to paying for tatoos when their children don't have enough food.

All public tenants with income (including family payments) pay between 25 and 30% rent. Once their kids are over 18 or under if they earn income they have to pay the same.

It was the young woman who said Mt Druitt rents were $400 a week and she did not say if she lived in public housing.

You seem to be basing your rent estimates on 40 years ago rents.

No, I am basing my rent estimates on the PERCENTAGES you gave me.
