so, who's watching this show tonight at 8:30 on SBS?
if it's not cancelled that is. The people involved have tried to get it wiped because it represents them in an unfavourable light.

Anyway ................ those are my opinions based on personal experience of the place and the people .... and I believe I am entitled to them.
Of course you are, every one is entitled to an opinion! I'm just voicing mine from a different perspective. I've also lived in a community many years ago that was wrought with addiction, crime and violence. There are communities across Australia where this is happening. Where families value their drugs above the well being of their children. In fact in my role as a volunteer I have looked after their children. I have seen generational abuse continue as I am sure many have here. But we have to break those cycles somehow.
I don't believe they are broken by calling them drop kicks and screaming remove their welfare this only helps to entrench them more into their way of doing things. We need to communicate a message that gives hope and purpose while at the same time does something to break down those cycles and create a different culture.
I was lucky too Rabbit, my kids could have grown up where we lived in a tiny weather board house in one of the worst places in SA , thank God we got out of there when they were young. Sadly though many don't and the cycle continues and more people are pulled into it. We so have to change the culture and quickly because this kind of stuff is swallowing up our youth, there are just too many casualties.

Why should people living in these place not have some little luxury? They are some 70km (?) from the beach, they cannot afford holidays, so for couple of hundreds of dollars they give the kids some fun and relief from the heat in summer.

Actually, that's where I saw the shirt being worn.....near the Pet shop.

and where did I say anything detrimental about that? The families living in those 2 homes could be employed and doing well - I don't know.
by the way, we never went to the beach either. Mt Druit does have a pool though - or at least it did - maybe they stole it.

@bella_again wrote:I dont mean to sound harsh, but taking control of their lives sounds good in theory, but they need to understand that not everyone gets opportunities, not everyone will get a job, not everyone will succeed.
So what should they do then give up? What's the point of living if you can't dream if you can't hope for something better? Hang on I'm probably reading that wrong, to a point you are right not every one will have the same opportunity that is true. But that doesn't mean we can't give them purpose, something to be involved in, something to be a part of. Knowing not everyone will have a job or the same opportunities means we have to get more productive in another way that's why I say lets look at employment differently.
People should be encouraged to contribute to their community where able, to be a part of something bigger, that is what gives them purpose. It can be something as simple as starting a community garden, where people can pick vege and fruit etc when needed, or participating in local community groups that make a difference. They need ownership of something to have purpose, something they can be a part of.
My two adult children have an intellectual disability, they are involved in their community regardless of the fact they will probably never work, they volunteer and they do what ever they can to make a difference. If they can do that with moderate intellectual disability these people can do far more, they just need the means, the support and a reason to do it.

I understand where you are coming from, and I didnt intend to offend anyone, as Im sure its everyones right to have dreams..my point was that having a dream isnt enough- there needs to be action and intent.
Someone in an earlier post made a comment about their backyards- why arent they taking care of their properties? growing vegetables to eat- surely that would be help with their budget and give them a purpose? Perhaps people need to be taught simple things- get back to basics..Im sure most people reading this forum, to one extent or another has gone without to build something up.
Whether its a mortgage, or a new car, or a holiday, or doing a job they disliked, they have gone without to have better for themselves and their families in the future.
Having a life takes work, for some its bl**dy hard work, and one of the rewards is self esteem..perhaps its too difficult for me, or the wrong forum to express this.
PS bella,
I admire your two children- they must be a credit to you and your parenting- and Im sure you are very proud of them.

Lets face it, there are people that live there that think the world owes them a living, they are poorly educated and not given a good start in life, that doesn't mean it is impossible for them, it becomes socially acceptable for them to behave this way.
I think a lot of the issues surrounding this is being confronted with the truth. I'm not sure that the whole suburb was branded, obviously not everyone is like those in the story. Even though where I live is branded a certain way, the reality is that it's a working class suburb.

Thank you youcandoit 🙂 I hear you and think you express yourself well. You also make some good points there, there is always something we can do to change our lives. You are right re intent and action, I don't know if they need help with that. My kids know its important to have a dream but you have to have a plan to achieve that. However that is something I have taught them.
But then again I believe in starring the worst of life in the face and deciding that it will not hold me down!! 🙂 Not everyone can do that but I must say attitude makes a really big difference.
Anyway thank you for your kind words 🙂
