Student Protesters Are Revolting

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has branded the students at his former university “revolting”.

Speaking at a Liberal Party fundraiser in Melbourne on Friday night, a tongue-in-cheek Mr Abbott said: “I always thought the students were revolting at my old university.”

His quip comes after Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop was mobbed at the University of Sydney before she announced an extra 1000 placements for overseas study trips under new government funding.

Mr Abbott, joined by Environment Minister Greg Hunt and Small Business Minister Bruce Billson, told the audience at Mornington Race Club that there would be more protests.

“This is but a foretaste of what is to come,” he said.

“But we must stay the course because if we are deterred, the future of our country is grim.”

Mr Abbott defended his pre-election promises saying he was determined to make hard calls.

“I don’t know if this government is going to be popular, but by God it’s going to be respected,” he said.

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence said the comment was made in jest.

“We believe that the Prime Minister was making a joke and appreciate that he is demonstrating the same good humour that the Foreign Minister showed on Friday,” he said.

He said students had a right to protest but not to use violence.

Yesterday Education Minister Christopher Pyne called for the students to be charged with assault.

He also called on Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to join the Government in condemning the “incomprehensible” behaviour of the students, who were protesting proposed cuts to higher education funding.

“Everyone is entitled to have a view — whether they like the Government, whether they don’t like the Government; whether they like or dislike particular policies,” Mr Pyne said.

“But the behaviour of the students yesterday at Sydney University was assault.”

totally agree with these comments by Mr Pyne. I'm certainly not happy that my taxes foster this sort of behaviour by certain groups of students.

The footage  shown on TV showed her being well protected by her minders, the only pushing and shoving appeared to be from her minders.

Silverfaun, this is a serious question. I'm curious at what you are so angry about. You've been angry for a long time and I thought once the LNP got in you and NW would change tack and be satisfied. I'm really not trying to pick an argument. I'm genuinely interested. People have a right to express their views about what is happening yet you still seem really angry. Just curious is all.

Can you imagine the uproar if this was done to Gillard... I mean a few protesters held banner that called her a **bleep** and they all went off the rails... if Gillard was pushed and shoved like this the left would be protesting in force.

Nonsense!

Firstly, those banners were completely out of line. But what made the event a national disgrace is that our current Prime Minister posed in front of them. If you can't see an issue there then there is something seriously loose somewhere.

Secondly, watch the video again. And preferably watch it from a number of different angles by news services other than Murdoch presses. Then you might see that whilst they were shouting, the ONLY pushing was being done by her handlers.

And thirdly, if I recall correctly Gillard was jostled by many, many more uni students some time last year in Perth after she came out of a recording/TV studio. There was no uproar because...

PEOPLE.

ARE.

ALLOWED.

TO.

DEMONSTRATE.

What about the sandwich tossing incident, Gillard "said she was treating the sandwich incident as a laughing matter" I think Chrissy was upset because Julie got her new hair do messed up.

I’m very happy with the government and the steps they are  taking to steady our country for the future.

I  am not in the least angry, its  the lies and  hate put up here every day that saddens  a lot of people including myself,  they can't be bothered posting on here any more.

I seldom come back on  here  and rarely put up a thread  anymore and will be visiting less in the future if what I see put  up here every day is any indication of the bile, lies and hate,  life's too  short  to pollute ones environment with it.

Even  the  most benign threads are spoiled with spite and sickening posters  cartoons.

Thank you for answering me, I appreciate it. I guess I see things quite differently and that's ok.

Oh Yeah.

I think most Labor supporters would have shrugged their shoulders and gone "Meh! She's a big girl. She can handle it." It was the Liberals that had a kiniption over it.

I don't recall outrage or calls for the sandwich thrower to be charged with an offence.

Have I got this right?  Every Premiere in Australia is objecting to Abbott and Hockey's government budget except Tony Barnett?  Troy Buswell's protector?

Troy Buswell the chair sniffer,

Troy Buswell that quit over a sex scandal?

Troy Buswell that wrote off a number of cars when he drove home from a wedding and still hasn't been charged for drunk driving because... because...

No witnesses even though his personal assistant insisted that he stop drinking and she left him to it?

Troy Buswell that wrote off checks on government housing and left a man unfound in his apartment dead for ages because as long as things were ticked off all was done?

Didn't someone on here earlier say that you can't expect to get things for free?

Well yes you can if you are a Liberal Party member like Troy Buswell.

But yes joono - all the Premiers met today and then held a press conference saying they would not (could not) accept the budget cuts.

This is what Newman had to say:

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman all but accused Mr Abbott and Treasurer Joe Hockey of trying to corner the states into calling for a higher or broader GST.

"I have a belief, and I think it is shared by the first ministers, that the federal government want us to talk about tax increases. Sorry, we are not going there," he said.

"In my state, we have done a lot of work cutting out inefficiency and waste and bureaucracy, and we didn't have to put pressure on people's cost of living, by putting up taxes on families. I think the federal government should look at their own inefficiencies, waste and bureaucracy for cuts before they go after tax increases. Simply they are passing $80 billion ... to the states."
