Stuff!

Here's a link to an article I just read.

We need to stop buying stuff – and I know just the people to persuade us (msn.com)

It sort of resonated with me.

Is there anyone else out there who is a bit guilty of accumulating-stuff?

I've been telling myself for years I need to declutter before I die but I have gone from a home that housed 3 kids to an empty nest where those 3 bedrooms are still full. How did that happen!

Sitting right next to me in a big bag next to the computer are lots of high heel shoes I have decided I can live without and which I barely wore.😑

Yet I still love it when there's a delivery. The latest yesterday was of Christmas ornaments.

Does anyone else here have too much of anything they think might need a sort?

Re: Stuff!

The responses have given me a laugh.

Yes, I know the feeling. Anytime I drive past places with things out for hard rubbish, can't help but pass my eyes over them although I have never actually collected anything.

But here's a tale I heard on Monday from a  close friend. Her daughter is moving house and getting rid of stuff they don't need. There were 2 chairs she offered to her parents but they were a bit low and needed some work so my friend said no and the daughter put them on marketplace.

Now these chairs had been ones the daughter picked up free from a hard rubbish collection a few years back.

I don't know if she then googled them or what but she lsited them at $120 each.

That shocked me as I would have probably put them on as free or $10 but anyhow, she was inundated with offers and people kept upping the offers. She finally settled on $400 for both and the man collected them within the hour.

That sort of thing never happens to me, I'm the sort who sells stuff and later finds out it was a collectable!😶

Me too... I don't sell, but sometimes I think if I give something away I will probably find out it was a rare, collectable item. So I keep all the junk...

Re: Stuff!

Stuff that I buy is stuff I want to keep (unless it breaks)…

Stuff I’m given is another matter. It’s weird; my sister just does not understand my taste, and persists in giving me “cute” stuff. I don’t want to keep or use such stuff but don’t want to hurt her feelings… so I have an antique cupboard (1840s, probably came from Victorian farm) which is full mostly with things I will never use.

Re: Stuff!

One word countess-marketplace.

The other option is op shop donations.

You don't have to hang on to stuff forever. Maybe take something out occasionally to use when your sister is over but after 12 months, duty done, feel free to move some of it on to a new home.

Re: Stuff!

Oh God I LOVE council pick ups. Folk start putting items out on their curbs a good month in advance, and I’m in there ratting around like a bowerbird! 😂

True story happened last week. I was browsing marketplace for a vanity table for my room.  I’m happy to renovate one if needed but I’m after older style rather than newer style if you get my drift. Anyway, saw a gorgeous one listed as ‘make an offer’. Seller actually had a tv on it and said that the tv and pedestal fan included in bundle. I made enquires about the table and she said $10 😲

I said no way, how about $20? (I felt bad) anyway she said ok. Then I asked if the tv worked, she said yes. So I asked how much, she said $10. 😲😲😲 omg I thought. So I replied, no I’ll give you $50 for both. She said no, she just wanted it all gone. Anyway, I had to work, so hubby picked them up. He handed over the $50 and thankfully she took it. I didn’t want the fan. Told her to sell it. Lol

When I got home from work, the vanity actually turned out to be an antique hall table, the bloody thing is massive 😆 and worth about $600.
The tv is absolutely huge. I had no idea from the pics.
So, I’m still without a bedroom vanity table and now in possession of a gorgeous hall table. It’s stunning.

Good old marketplace ❤️

Re: Stuff!

Sometimes I see things I would love to have for free in the street... but I don't know how to go home with them because they are too heavy to carry. This is so annoying, as some of this stuff could even be helpful to have more order in my place, like a small cabinet. 😞

Re: Stuff!

Wow, that is an amazing find.

And here I was, feeling pleased with myself when I snaffled a cake tin for $5, marked down from $10.

I should maybe raise my aspirations.

Re: Stuff!

Most people I see prowling around the hard rubbish collections always travel in pairs. I guess it is for this very reason so if you can, grab a friend and go back!
