Sycamore Trees

Hi all 🙂  Anyone know anything about growing and keeping these trees healthy?  I've had some pop up in the back yard perfectly along the fenceline, which is great.  The are close to six feet tall now and have lost nearly all their leaves.  Are they a disiduous tree? I have googled and read up a little bit but was just wondering if anyone here can give me some more info or advice to help them grow big and strong.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Sycamore Trees

I live in the U.S., so I'm not sure if my advice will be helpful.

There are several Sycamore trees in the park behind my home. These trees are approx. 50 years old, and are very tall. They don't need a lot of care, or a lot of water.

They do lose their leaves in the fall-winter.

I hope your trees are not growing under any wires, as they will grow very tall. The crows love these trees.

Also, don't park any vehicles under these trees, as they leave a very sticky residue when the leaves fall off.

I'm not sure how they do in freezing weather, as we don't get snow where I live.

Good luck. I think they are very pretty trees.

Sycamore Trees

Oh thanks tcm.  These are suckers that sprang from a tree from my neighbours yard which has since been cut down 😞 I nearly cried when they cut it down, it was beautiful and provided some nice privacy, but I've kept 5 of the babys around my yard, 4 along the fence line and 1 out the front yard. I guess I was getting a bit worried seeing the leaves discolour and fall off.  There are no wires above so thats all good 🙂

But with the sticky leaves falling and cars parked nearby could be a future problem...

I also didn't mention that my neighbor had one in the front yard, one day it just fell over. It missed crushing my car by a few inches.

The bigger they get, the bigger the mess every year.

I remember some old sheet music that my Mother used to pop up on her piano and play......One piece was a song probably from my Grandmothers era, in the mid 1930's or 40's or something.....I remember some of the the words, think it was the beginning of the chorus "Six tall slim slick sycamore saplins - possum up a tree!....". Can hum to tune still, was very catchy 🙂

Hehe thats cute, I'd love them to attract some possums to the yard lol

I had a massive oak tree in the front yard of my old house, so the messy leaves dont really bother me all that much.  I guess evergreens would be more practical, I just like the fact that these havent cost me a cent and hopefully in a couple of years I will have some nice little trees in the yard 🙂
