Sydney Family's $2 Million Welfare Rort

Thirty-eight members of a western Sydney family have been caught rorting $2 million of welfare payments from the government.

One person claimed benefits while depositing $750,000 over three years and another paid off a $300,000 mortgage in just over two years while claiming income support.

A third person received rent assistance for a property they already owned, said the Department of Human Services on Thursday.

A spokesman for the department says the family fraud was discovered from a tip-off that a man had failed to declare his income.

Nineteen family members have had their welfare payments cancelled after a wide-ranging investigation and another 19 have had their payments reduced.

Five members of the family have been referred to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and debts have been raised against the fraudsters.

She admitted there was one family member who had failed to report almost $1 million over 11 years, and her department is working closely with the Australian Tax Office and Australian Federal Police.

"The debts we currently have in relation to social welfare fraud investigations are $39 million," she said.

She warned people who are rorting the system that "we will find you".

Oh really? It took a tip-off for them to find this lot!

What about the other $37mil?

Australia the bountiful, Centrelink the inept.

Wasn't this about rorting the system?

If you want to start a new thread about foreign investors rorting our tax system, feel free. I have no doubt you'll find pleny of material.

This thread is about Centrelink fraud.

Yes, because it's a much more pleasant sport to attack welfare recipients and than the top end of town rip off merchants.

Welfare recipients who defrauded the system by not declaring an income that would otherwise have made them ineligible for welfare.

Thus depriving people truly in need of welfare.

Perhaps read the OP again:

Got something you want to tell us? The catharsis of admissions is good for the character.

I knew a couple who were rorting Centrelink. They were registered as a married couple under one name, another couple under another name , and each of them were registered as single under two other names. They owned property in Queensland, and property in NSW - rented out. They themselves lived in Housing Commission homes with very cheap rent. And, Yes we reported them - several times over the years. They were even interviewed by Centrelink. As far as I know they were never caught, and they may be still doing it.

Thats a very elaborate scheme Rabbitear, the only way they could get away with that is having fake identification documents and birth certificates etc.  Thats 3 lots of fake ID each Cat Surprised

how did I know that someone would call me a liar? What makes you think I would make this up? They had false Ids and passports from way back in 60's. As a matter of fact they were involved in much more than Centrelink fraud - but, I won't even bother going into that as you will not believe me. Ask me if I give a rat's rectum, if you believe me or not? Honestly, I don't know why I bother.

You obviously have very close relationships with some very interesting people.  Obviously, fraud happens but most professional criminals who are able to perpetrate such elaborate crime do not confide to anybody.

Well human nature being what it is means that some people are more than happy ti boast about whatever they are getting away with, imagined or true. Twenty years ago a brother of a friend of mine was gloating about working and getting unemployment benefits at a party. Then next thing I heard was that he was in jail for fraud and he was

these people I am talking about certainly deserved to be caught. Their Boss was caught and sent to prison - and it was not for Centrelink fraud -  but somehow they avoided it. Bearing in mind that I am talking about 30 years ago, they may well have been caught in the interim - I haven't had contact with them for many years.

Another person I know was growing funny tomatoes and supplying it to a bikey gang in .... well, let's just say a country town. The gang were arrested but this person I know got away by the skin of his teeth. Actually he had just delivered a trailer load of his goods to them and as luck would have it, swept the trailer and picked up a load of firewood from the same place. He was on the way out of the gate with his firewood, when the fuzz arrived. He was arrested and accused of being their ring leader, but got off because of that load of firewood and because none of the bikies rolled over on him (is that the term?) - strange isn't it?

There was a 3 months trial and all were put away for varying times - except this person I know. I could tell you more about that but it may give you enough information to find the case. Interestingly, their solicitor and barrister were both members of the same bikie gang

Yes, he has boasted about it ever since, but while the trial was on he was like a little scared rabbit.

Now, of course some will say, I made it all up - but ask me if I care.
