New change there too - the A & E will have the provision to charge the $7 fee for people being seen there if there visit is not considered an emergency. So if their health issue was something they should have gone to the Dr for but decided to go to A&E to avoid the $7 fee, won't work like that...they will still have to pay.

Re: THE BUDGET THREAD

The changes for people under 30 are every bit as bad as they sound. From 18 to 30 yrs, that is a lot of people affected by the no dole for 6 mths. Even when they receive it after the first 6mths it is not paid continuously from there on.

This is about the area I live in. These youth can't get a job because there aren't many, not because they are ALL lazy bludgers.

"Major changes to the countryโ€™s unemployment benefits programs are likely to hit the Illawarra particularly hard, with the latest figures from the Brotherhood of St Laurence showing the region has the second highest youth unemployment rate in NSW."

How much is it going to cast to create and run work for dole scheme for this many unemployed youth?c

The latest youth unemployment figures show more than 257,000 young Australians are unemployed.

The UK had over 1 million unemployed youth 18 -24 a couple if years ago. That figure included those with university degrees. Country was/is economically depressed. Did they cut the youths eligibility for the dole, make them live 6 mths without any income?

If a country can't provide the majority with jobs it is cruel to punish the youth if there is an extreme shortage of jobs.

Re: THE BUDGET THREAD

$20b Medical Research fund

The $7 payment to Dr etc. $5 of this goes into the above fund. Abbott wants Australia to have the best medical research facility in the WORLD. How can Australia afford to have better Medical facility than other more richer countries?.
Poor peoples money contributing to the fund.

If LNP lose the next election, i hope the $7 fee is the first thing to be scrapped.

Medical research is very important, but to fund it by slugging every Dr patient $7? That $7 would better spent on funding hospitals and improving health services.

What is the point of having the Best Medical research facility in the world if your health system is a shambles? Hospitals will get less Fed Govt funding in a year or so.

Just been having a cuppa with Gwen (my neighbour). We were discussing this again and I mentioned having heard that non emergent visits to hospital Accident and Emergency units would be charged $7 also.

Her reply: "Oh well, looks like if I'm sick I'll just wait till I'm really sick then they'll have to take me in and admit me."

She's fairly spritely for her age, goes for a morning and late afternoon walk with her little dog in a pram, is mentally switched on but does not have a lot of family support (they live 3 hours from here). I pop in to visit her every second day and we chat over the fence on other days.

Her health is good but of course she is over 80 and anything could happen.

She's trying to think of what to cut out so as she will have funds to go to the Doctor/have blood tests etc just in case. Probably her twice weekly bingo meetings will have to be culled so as to save a few dollars.

She's been a Liberal party voter all her life and is disgusted in Tony Abbott. As she said to me this morning: "Obviously he doesn't have an elderly mum whose only income is their pension. He needs boot up the seat of his pants."

He didn't even promise a facility just a fund to be used some time in the future.

Re: THE BUDGET THREAD

I agree with you on this am*3......for goodness sakes, why not 'HIT' the pharmaceutical companies for this 'RESEARCH FUND'....they make enough out of everyone.

TA is definitely supporting the corporations and using smoke and mirrors tactics *cough-lies to hide behind re. the real reason for this supposed medical facility for research 'guff'. ALL GUFF IMO.

Clive Palmer is a self-made billionaire he knows how to run a business and make money. I am sure he will make money for our country without penny pinching from old age pensioners. The problem with labor and liberal is they are in it for the money, it is a career path for them but not for Clive Palmer.  Clive donates 100% of his parliamentary wage to charity, he is interested in the country not the salary from being a politician.

he also still gives donations to the liberal party from accounts that i have seen.  i personally think he is setting himself up as supposed opposition to the libs but will support them when he gets power.  a lib in sheeps clothing.

all in all the budget is the disgrace I expected it to be.   Australia is on the way to being ruined by this uncompassionate and completely disgusting group of people that call themselves a government.  hockey proved his attitude with his little pre delivery dance and abbot with his pre delivery party.  this govt, their decisions and choices are reprehensible.

Such is life.

Re: THE BUDGET THREAD

That medical research will probably be mostly funded by the extra bucks you pay to see a doctor or get a blood test,so the general public will be paying for that.not the feral government. They're also slashing funding for the CSIRIO.Maybe they need the money to build churches ....or poorhouses.
