A good article, but his own point about the generation who rid us of the 'white australia policy' as compared to attitudes now is a bit of an unknown really. i could generalise and say that being more content and laid -back than people seem today (although this is difficult to quantify also) played a part in the passage of the policy passing so easily.. perhaps other factors contribute to conservatism , like the success of propoganda style psuedo -journalism. sheer weight of material can wear people down enough to adopt a position that may not manifest otherwise.
