To all of those in QLD facing floods again good luck.

i have a nice somewhere around bangalow. she was in byron last night and no-ones heard from her today. I hope she's staying out and not trying to drive back to the gold coast.

hmmm talking off high winds, Az does your mob have to go up over St Helena, that hill near byron? because driving a motorhome over that would be bloody hairy to say the least. Actually just driving a motorhome anywhere in big wionds would be a challenge.

I wouldn't drive my kombi when it was really windy 🙂

That poor child who was hit by a tree is in critical condition. People need to get priorities straight, sightseeing in these conditions is just stupid and dangerous. Sick of seeing pics of kids playing in the surf and people driving through flooded roads.

I agree Chinchuckchick

Also feel frustrated that residents in some areas who were advised to leave later needed 'emergency' rescuing.

2:15pm:

There are reports that the evacuation centre in Bundaberg is being evacuated.

Around 2,000 properties have been affected by flood as floodwaters pass 9 metres.

Local resident Col Reynolds says he has been through several local floods and says he has not seen anything like it.

"There's pockets of North Bundaberg, pockets of east and around the CBD area which are traditionally flood areas, but it is now going into unchartered waters.

"That's the scary part, so people who have been safe in all those previous floods, and there's generations of families that have been safe, are now having to move."

2:04pm:

Premier Campbell Newman holds a press conference on the latest developments on the Queensland flood crisis.

Mr Newman says there is great concern for the people of North Bundaberg, where mandatory evacuations are in effect as floodwaters are estimated to be moving around 40 knots.

"We are also very concerned that the velocity of the water and the rise in water levels means that literally houses, particularly in North Bundaberg and maybe other locations, could be actually swept away.

"This is a very real prospect. In the 1893 floods in Brisbane, houses were literally lifted off their stumps and swept down the Brisbane River and that is a real prospect this afternoon, or tonight in North Bundaberg."

"Now because the water has gone to unprecedented levels, we now have a significant group or significant number of people who are in danger of being trapped in areas in North Bundaberg.

"Essentially they are about to be, if not already, isolated on at least one island."

There are concerns that the city's hospital will flood and 60 patients have been moved from the ground level.

Mr Newman says 14 aircraft are available to aid in the emergency and he is trying to get more.

"There are 12 civilian aircraft and two Black Hawks. Those aircraft will be flying from picking people up at North Bundaberg and these locations and taking people to the nearest place of safety."

The Lockyer Valley Regional Council says reports are coming in that floodwaters look to have peaked in and around Glenore Grove.

It says without further rain, water is not expected to get any higher.

The council says Laidley Creek is draining very slowly in that area, however, and the Warrego Highway at the crossroads is expected to remain closed for many more hours.

1:48pm:

South Bank Corporation chief executive Jeff Weigh has issued the following statement regarding the recent severe weather and its effect on the South Bank precinct in Brisbane.

"As of 12 midday, January 28, Clem Jones Promenade has been closed due to severe weather.

"The Parklands remain open but it's advised that visitors use caution if coming to the precinct."

North Burnett mayor Don Waugh says the flood damage in the region is devastating.

He says homes have been inundated and there is widespread citrus crop damage at Gayndah.

Councillor Waugh says a large dairy farm at Mundubbera has been wiped out.

"That dairy property has a milking operation, milking 400 head of cattle.

"That has been totally inundated, the cattle washed away and there's nothing left."

1:06pm:

The Southern Downs Regional Council is preparing for homes in Warwick to be inundated after revising its predicted flood peak.

Authorities are now expecting this afternoon's peak to split the town and inundate more than 100 homes.

The council is opening a second evacuation centre at the Slade Campus in Warwick in addition to the Warwick Indoor Recreation Centre.

1:04pm:

Hundreds of Brisbane residents have begun moving their possessions to higher ground ahead of tomorrow's peak of the Brisbane River.

Catherine Esler, who lives in Milton in the city's inner west, lost almost everything when the first floor of her home went under water two years ago.

She has been told the floodwaters will inundate the ground floor of her house this time around.

It's pretty devastating, it happened two years ago and we're just reliving a nightmare.

12:57pm:

Dozens of businesses have gone underwater in Gympie.

Businesses owner Robert Nimo says he is waiting for the Mary River to peak.

"We think at least probably waist deep, so maybe on the window sill, something like that will be maybe at the 21 metres thereabouts," he said.

"We've got about a foot to go before it reaches the floor that we're standing on, so yeah we'll be out of business for maybe at least a week by the time we clean up."

11:53am: Gale-force winds are proving to be the biggest problem on the Gold Coast, with doors and windows being ripped off high-rise buildings.

The Nerang River has broken its banks at Budds Beach and water is now lapping at the entrance of some high-rises.

Police in Surfers Paradise have blocked access to roads where large pieces of debris are flying around in the wind.

11:47am: Helicopters are working to rescue people trapped in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, as floodwaters continue to rise.

More than 600mm of rain has fallen in the Lockyer Creek catchment since yesterday morning and some creeks are peaking higher than the deadly 2011 floods.
