Taking mock compassion too far.

Ok we have had the "Poor Illegal Refugee" the "Poor Dole Bludger" the "Poor whatever" thread so now what about the "Poor Self Inflicted Addict" thread.

We may as well add them to the taxpayers  burden as well. We can cater for their "special needs" out of the bottomless pit of our national debt.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

If the death penalty did deter drug traffickers, it would suggest that supply would reduce in the particular country, pushing up prices. Drug use would then also fall.

But a study of the experience of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia between 1999 and 2005, a time when Singapore and Malaysia were executing heavily and Indonesia was not, shows that drugs were significant cheaper in Singapore and Malaysia Drug use also rose in both countries and remained more prevalent in Singapore than Indonesia.

"During this era, 73 persons were executed in Singapore [including more than half who were drug offenders], compared to two in Indonesia," Kagan said. "Yet drug trafficking was increasing and drug prices were lower in Singapore."

Taxes are collectedby the Govt in Australia which then redistributes them... to areas including social welfare/Govt benefits....

Would you rather live in a country that has no Govt benefits  at all for the unemployed, sick, disabled, aged persons?

Maybe we need a bit of compassion for the "Poor Mining Magnate", "Poor Multinational Tax Avoider" and the "Poor Underpaid Politician" too.  They're certainly adding to the taxpayer burden via their "special needs".

Execute one or one hundred drug dealers, there will be plenty more willing to become drug dealers (for the $$)

How is that going to stop the demand for drugs?

It won't stop the demand. But it will help stop the supply.

Why do you call it mock compassion, Poddster?

Because Donna started a thread and people were having a conversation and ignoring him.

Seriously that is one of your solutions? In a country that doesn't have a death penalty (for any offence).

Seriously? Yes. If we want to get serious about the drug epidemic gripping our country, it should be re-introduced.

Because addiction to drugs like ice, meth and cocaine are the death penalty to our youth.

Seriously?

Are you going to say the same when your grandchild is up for execution?

Drug addicts are already a great burden on our society.  Not sure if the figures are still the same but few years ago it was estimated that about 1/2 of all home burglaries were done by people needing money for drugs.  Even if you were one of the lucky ones who did not get burgled, your insurance premiums have to cover those who were.  So we all pay higher insurance, and dole to the unemployable junkies, not to mention the cots of incarceration.  Cost of one year in jail is much more than 1 year in rehab, and many people would not need whole year in rehab, but are jailed for several years.  I think it is much better alternative to help these people to overcome their addiction, and become productive members of the society.

I would not expect you to care about being compassionate, but surely you would prefer the cheaper way to deal with the addiction problem?

My grandson is already dying a slow death thanks to the ready supply of drugs and the vultures that are making money off his and other young aussies addiction thank you very much.

An execution would be much kinder than the misery he's going through, and the sorrow of his family.

Seriously.

It must be horrible for your family to go through watching your grandson struggle with drug addiction  Icy......................but what a terrible thing to say as his grandmother.

Nothing my children or grandchildren could do would make me say they would  be better off executed.

And yes I have a family member who was a serious dope user.
