Australians will from next week be able to tap and pay for things up to $200 without using their PIN, following a change designed bid to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The Australian Payments Network on Friday announced the $100 contactless card PIN limit would be doubled for a three-month period and could be extended if necessary.
This move, the self-regulatory body for the payments industry said, would reduce the need for physical contact with the payment terminal.
AusPayNet chief executive Andy White said the new limit would be progressively introduced across certain cards and at certain retailers, with major supermarkets expected to be among the first.
The Assistant Minister for Financial Services Jane Hume, and the Shadow Assistant Treasurer, Stephen Jones, both welcomed the change.
If you must go out, then please use tap and pay.
Money is plastic and the virus can be active on plastic for up to 3 days.
Stay safe

its one of the few forced apon me modern money things i like
and raising it will make it almost impossible for me to have to remember my pin when my shopping goes over the $100 limit.

David, you can change your pin to something that suits, or easy for you to remember.
But not one that's too easy for someone else to figure out.
See your bank.....if you can.

I accidentally paid by tap and pay without a PIN recently. I moved my card toward the card reader and it started printing a receipt. I pleaded innocent, saying I didn't enter my card. The woman who served me looked as bamboozled as me, but said, well you have paid according to the receipt. It wasn't until I left the store that I realized what happened. But the card must have been about 10+ centimetres away from the reader.

I use tap and go for all my purchases, except when shopping in Aldi, 'cause it costs me extra to use it there

i dont think any number would help other than 1234
as its so seldom i use my card on a transaction over $100 its just getting lost in my memory bank.
then i get panic set in, everyones watching!
ive had the same number for many years, when i'm calm it just comes natural
its when i havent noticed the total is over and ive tapped and it goes to put ya number in automatically.
my mind goes blank.
so far ive allways got it sometimes after a couple of tries.
but as i said, $200 i'll never need it.

$200 a throw? That sounds good to me...
That'll cover the groceries, and then some.
As long, of course, as there are groceries on the shelf, to be bought, that is...
