Should taxpayers have to pay for politicians state funerals years after they have retired from office and they also collect a very generous taxpayer funded pension for life.

Generally I would say yes. Anyone that served as a respected leader should be given the recognition of a state funeral.
In the case of someone like Wran, he left behind some great legacies and continued to work for his state after he left politics.
