It turns nuclear.

Re: Terrorist attack in sydney

If I were in your position as

A migrant I would very much

Appreciate what had been

Bestowed upon me and

Would be reluctant to support

Any religious group that would

Take away those privileges with

The blink of an eye

Given the chance

Re: Terrorist attack in sydney

i have a feeling that the great she elephant

knows exactly what the difference is

between our post war immigration intake

and the current refugees situation.

her example is irrelevant to the discussion

The whole point is that, basically I don't see the difference - apart from the fact that I was made to feel welcomes and current refugees mostly aren't . Once you have been accepted as a permanent resident, then your entitlements should be exactly the same regardless of how you came here. If becoming an Australian citizen were to be made a requirement for receiving benefits, then I would be quite happy to go along with that, but the post I was initially replying to was complaining about refugees BECAUSE they take out Australian citizenship

Interesting points you raise lapetus.  I wonder about your statements that Islam holds itself as the only true faith though.  I'm not religious at all but I have heard the Roman Catholic Mass a few times and heard, amongst other things:

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

Same thing surely?  And, in my view anyway, equally as damaging.

dont know what they preach in their

churches but haven't heard of any

catholic anti infidel extremism.

looks like they have moved on from

the middle ages, evolved, adapted.

and that is the difference.

doesnt 'catholic' mean universal/

all inclusive?

ok.

i read it differently. i thought the post

was suggesting some refugees cheat

the system.  which is completely different

to our post-war immigration program where

we needed people to populate australia -

as you said, we paid them to come here.

(populate or perish)

that is why i still feel your example was

not relevant to this discussion.

Did I ever say I didn't appreciate what had been bestowed upon me?.

And while I acknowledge there will always be  extremists and crackpots (google Jack van Tongeren or the Hilto Hotel Bombing)  I have never personally met a member of that 'other religious group' who wanted to take any of my privilages from me - and I suspect neither have you.

My dentist is a Muslim, the proprietors of one of my local cafes are Muslims, two of the doctors at my local surgery are Muslims and several of the nurses who cared for my father when he was dying were Muslims - and not one of them has ever shown any desire either to kill me, convert me, or subject me to Sharia Law.

hmmm....i think that is a little naive.

this current threat is different.

these terrorist leaders are probably

a lot smarter than you think and

much better organised than you think.

internet/social media plays a huge role,

something that was not there before.

It actually makes you a leech.

My parents came from another country. Collected nothing from the government, ever, became citizens as soon as they could.

Oh, it gets even worse, Nev. I was actually paid to come here - I was a ten quid tourist.

But I'm curious, didn't your mum get child endowment for you? Was she a stay-at-home mum and if so didn't your dad claim her as a dependnat on his tax?, didn't you go to school here? (even private schools received government subsidies)

Their eyes always gloss over when child endowment and education allowances are mentioned.

Some say "Child endowment was only 50 cents a week".   In 1964, 50 cents per hour was the going rate for cleaning someone's house. What is it now?  $20, $25 ?    $20 per week to help out with a child is excellent.

I worked for the most part of 60 years and was still eligible for child endowment, education allowance, part widow's pension (I was not a widow), and age pension.

Should I have refused the help?
