If not for a couple of photos circulating on Twitter, it's a fair chance that Mr Abbott's weekend exploits would have gone unnoticed.

His office did not issue a statement until the blurry image of the PM giving the thumbs-up from behind the wheel of a fire truck appeared on the social media site.

While many Twitter followers praised his volunteering spirit, others questioned the wisdom of the nation's leader putting himself in the line of fire.

But for Mr Abbott, it was just another day as a volunteer firey with his local brigade, something he has been doing since 2001.

  no one carries cameras anymore unless they want to take professional photos.  most people use their smartphones.  how do you hide from that?  LOL

Not entirely true. The photo's that have been published by the Daily Telegraph with their news reports in the last couple of days have been professional shots taken by their staff photographers. They were with him while he met his team.

Like I said earlier, the Telegraph is not doing Abbott any great favours by publishing these photos with 'hero' status stories attached. No other news outlet is really touching the story while they concentrate on the disaster rather than the PM. And this is the way it should be.

The twitter photos have been taken up by social media and other news outlets who were not invited to be with Abbott while he volunteered.

Just a thought......maybe being Prime Minister is out of his comfort zone.   He certainly looks and sounds awkward in that role.

Perhaps he feels more comfortable in these other roles.

What is his team of minders doing while he performs these other activities.........get in everyone's way?

I would rather have a leader with a brain than just be a fine physical example.
