The Appalling Asylum Seeker Conditions

This is disgraceful and I can only hope the people who are in charge fix this asap.

An asylum seeker who was moved off Nauru to give birth is being locked up for 18 hours a day in a detention centre in Brisbane while her week-old baby remains in hospital with respiratory problems.

The case of Latifa, a 31-year-old woman of the persecuted Rohingya people of Myanmar, has shocked churches and refugee advocates.

She was separated from her baby on Sunday, four days after a caesarean delivery, and has since been allowed to visit him only between 10am and 4pm in Brisbane's Mater Hospital. The boy, named Farus, has respiratory problems and needs round-the-clock medical care.

Latifa is confined to the Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation, 20 minutes away, where her husband and two children, four and seven, are being held.

Latifa's husband, Niza, is not allowed to visit the child at all, according to people in daily contact with the family.

it is all good and well to understand why someone would do something.

But choosing a better lifestyle is not a reason to seek assylum.

remind me again of the parameters for seeking assylum or refugee status?"

If you able to state for a fact what exactly these people's lifestyle has been (everywhere they have been). Please do so

cherry picking again?

you're the one who said they chose a better lifestyle.

(that's in the rest of the post made by you which I quoted, but you have conveniently failed to do, editing to twist and distirt the facts)

Iza, I may have missed a few posts, but are you comparing the 4x18hours that this mother wasn't able to be with her baby with the forced permanent relinquishment of babies in the past?

How do you know that this woman, traumatised by her life experiences, not being able to fully understand why she is not allowed to be with her baby, was not thinking that the baby was being taken away from her?  There might be rumours about the forced adoptions circulating in the camps - that story has been on TV, it would be easily to misunderstand, and think that it still happens.

It is not possible to compare to experience what this woman is going through to anything Australian women experience.  People in their own country, able to talk to the hospital staff in their language, who understand how things are done, people with family support, and above all FREE.

This woman is not a criminal, if she was not bona fide refugee, she would not be able to stay in refugee camp for 10 years, so why would she have to be under guard?  Does anybody really think that she would run away with her newborn sick baby and no money?  Where would she go, what could she do?

Refugee camps are not permanent solutions, and they do not qualify as destination for refugees, it suppose to be temporaly place while they are being processed.  The rule  that refugees lose their status once  they reach "safe" country only means a country that is a signatory to the refugee convention.  Malaysia or Indonesia, or any other country between here and the countries "boat" people are coming from are not considered "safe countries".
What you are  saying that these people should give up their basic human rights and stay in the camp, where there is nothing; they cannot work, the kids get none or very rudimentary education, and therefore there is no future for them.

Yes, there are millions of displaced people around the world, and it will get worse, and some will end up in Australia.  And it is the duty of our government to make sure they are treated in a decent way.

I know for a fact that there are at least 3 refugee camps in Thailand which provide an education to a year 12 standard. The adults can and do work and with help they are building a self sustainable community until such time that they can return to their own homes. (which many have accepted will never happen, so work hard to build their new community - but in the back of their minds and for their children, there is hope)

They are safe and have never had an air strike, unlike Darwin has....

I have already said that I was shocked by the conditions on Nauru, I never knew, and it is well known that i am a strong advocate for refugees and those who seek asylum.

In the context of this thread, I fail to see how this family have not been afforded decent treatment, especially considering they are as yet unprocessed and as such considered high risk and requiring relevant security.

We can only help to the best of our ability, even those that come to Australia. No, i don't believe that Nauru is the best we can do, I did expect better than that, as I said, there are Thai camps that seem much better - but then it is also cheaper to administer to the Thai camps than it is to Australian ones as the dollar goes a whole lot further there and those refugees are grateful for any help, for any improvement in their lifestyle, and most of all they are grateful to simply be safe and able to sleep at night in relative security. Whereas here, and the Australian attitude, it seems to be every one wants so much more.

The way I see it is we can help say 20 people with all the bells and whistles, or we can help hundreds, at least a little bit. at least make some improvements for a larger amount of people.

The family featured in this thread have received more than most, it may not have been perfect or ideal, but it was at least something. I cannot see how it can be considered that under the circumstances, they have not been treated decently.

I tried to do so when I last voted.

May I suggest:

Didn't they spend the previous 10 years in a refugee camp in Malaysia? Not ideal, but safe from persecution. An asylum seeker, by definition, is someone seeking safety from persecution, religious freedom. Not a better lifestyle for their family, for that you have to immigrate through the correct legal channels. Not sure why this is so hard for some to understand.
