People today are so easily offended.

Its something we see on a daily basis on here from some,  people constantly state that they are offended by this or that or this post or that post and it’s something we see on a daily basis in the real world and on the news.   Someone always seems to take offense to minor issues and free speech and has to tell the world and tell us all that they are "OFFENDED" or take "OFFENSE" at this or that

One of the lessons that most of us learned at an early age was, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me."  When I grew up it wasn't called "bullying," it was called teasing and having a bit of fun at each other’s expense  and we grew thick skin from it and got on with life.  NOW so many people are offended by so many minor things.

Maybe today's world and the soft***** (soft roosters) need to grow a little thick skin  and stop being so easily offended by everything.

So thoughts, are some to easily offended and take offense to everything.

We draw the line where it hurts or insults other people.  We stopped calling dark people sooty when they told us it is offensive to them. We stopped calling deaf people dumb because it is not true.  We don't call people with hyphenated names two dads because it is a hideous insult.  We don't give call someone spaz because they walk with a funny gait.

We just treat people with a bit of respect and consideration instead of lambasting, mocking and name calling because of their differing opinion.

And no, the so called outrage bus has been invented to shut people up.  Not people that were whinging but people who were making jokes and laughing about the hideousness of the argument or statement.    It's the teasing and laughing at that got some of the newscorpse writers and friends started with the outrage bus nonsense because they were getting laughed at and couldn't handle it.

Then if that's the case, we as a species need to cease communication with each other immediately - as there's always someone, somewhere, who takes almost anything as an insult - or take offense. And we can't have that, can we?

It's all very well to say that we draw the line where it begins to hurt others - but given that so many are hurt by so little, where exactly do we draw that line?

Sorry, but it's getting a little too blurry for me.

Well no, it's through the open discussion of these issues that people learn what is offensive, insulting or hurtful to other poeple and the reason it is offensive, then with time we (most of us) change some of our attitudes and words out of respect for others.  It's generally not such little issues that people have taken offence to.

They might sound like little issues to some but if they've become an issue they are obviously not little to others.  One person taking offence doesn't cause a mob of people to become offended for them.

Women who have been accused of jumping on the outrage bus over some of abbott's comments are not reacting because someone told them to or on behalf of someone else, they just get sick of the stupid everyday sexism they experience with far too much regularity.

Actually, I've observed that in most cases - it is the little issues that are the problem - and people object most vehemently to.

The media take up arms, as they know full well it promotes sales or views, or whatever it needs for them to maintain a high profile - and therein lies much of the casuality.

In regards to women's outrage over sexism - i agree 100%. Regardless of who the insults stem from.

Sometimes the issues are not as little as they first appear and other times I think the media or whoever whips up a frenzy over something small to deflect from other bigger issues.

I watched the Odd Angry shot film the other night.

A true film icon that isn't shown when it should be, all because it is not PC anymore.

How can someone be offended by something made 30 years ago ?

Or one word in a film about WWII .

That's just silly.

killing people for a drawing is just as silly. i demand to be taken seriously. i also demand respect for my way of life.

I don't think anyone disrespects your way of life, or your wish to be taken seriously - it's just that when you decide to force those ideals down others' throats that some may take umbrage.

Of course, when your way of life also interferes with the practical functioning of the society in which you live, then again there will be issues.

And killing people for drawings/sketches? Absolutely bl@@dy disgusting!

how about offending a child raping warlord?

seems to be accepted.

A question for all who care to answer.

You are visiting somewhere in Aus where quite a few Aboriginies live.

In a general conversation between 20 people at a BBQ, an Aboriginie says (on overhearing something you say)

"What would "you" whities know about that" or "Whites thinking they know better", both said in a put down, racist way.

Question

1. Would you be offended ?

2. Would you say anything back ?

3. If so, what would you say ?

I have another scenario but will do that later.

Oh dear! As mortally offended and outraged as I would be at such a heinous racial slur...I'd probably just move on.

After all...in my 60-odd years, I've been called far, far worse! But luckily, my thick skin has managed to keep me from too much harm over the years.

when they introduced those "no offence laws" (18 something) i was wondering about the aborigines who use  quite offensive words when you make the mistake of just walking past them....

i am not going to sue of course but i do think racism works both ways.

i don't think it's ok for them to call me names because of my skin colour which i was born with and can't change unless i use a permanent marker or get tattooed all over just as it is not ok for me to call them names because of their skin colour (which would never come to my mind). i would rather be interested in asking them about bush tucker as i am interested in food things.

lal

Interesting post.

Not often people come out and say that it occurs.

You do get the odd angry one who is very vocal. For most, it just seems a normal part of life.

The reaction of some (Aboriginies) seeing a white male (me) driving an Aboriginie lady to church or

helping with the shopping or just interacting as we go about day to day is quite funny.

Bush tucker is great. I love most of it.

Once again, you're deliberately skewing words and meanings to get a reaction.

Sorry, it ain't gonna work this time. I've already figured you out, my friend!
