what do we think? was the joke worthy of the slap?
not in my view.
bad taste for sure.
something will smith could have addressed in a civilised manner.
no after thought sorry will cuy it, IMO
he must have the statue taken back
violence cannot be rewarded

Why would Will want to hurt Rock - it was clearly - just a ' shut up '.

I don't think any reasonable person condones violence. We are living at an odd time where political incorrectness and bad behavior have been judged and labelled by the wrong people IMO. The concepts of violence, racism, sexism, religious discrimination etc seem to be black and white, yet few people are able to clearly explain what the boundaries of each are. What seems to have been lost is the human understanding of behavior and has been replaced with an eagerness to judge and attack, rather than consideration of the circumstances and reasonableness.
What Will Smith did was upsetting and difficult to witness for me. But it is a reminder that chivalry and honour are not dead. Anybody who chooses to insult another man's wife must accept the consequences. The rules go out the gate. There are lines you do not cross unless you want to risk a hard smack in the mouth.
Of course Will Smith is now regretful because his raging hormones may have affected his reputation and acting career. But I bet as a man he feels differently. I don't see Chris Rock as the sole victim. I see him as a tactless fool who chose the wrong man's wife to bring up with insensitivity, just to get a laugh. He faced the consequences. Such is life in the male world - best to keep your mouth shut next time.

There were several things Will Smith could have done in response to whatever โjokeโ was said. A public slap at a prestigious world-televised event was not appropriate and I have some difficulty accepting it was spontaneous.
In the entertainment world, almost any publicity is good publicity. Admission: I donโt watch the Oscars, at least partly because it has become closed-in and rather pretentious. Ricky Gervaisโ speech last year showcased some issues in how seriously movie stars and directors and this whole entertainment world take themselves. Is it possible that this slap was indeed staged, in order to get people watching and talking about the Oscars again?
Against that, itโs equally hard to imagine Will Smith risking the sort of backlash this may well entail. If he gets a reputation as a volatile over-sensitive โcanโt take a jokeโ (even if the joke was off-colour and - as has been said - even more inappropriate) perpetrator of a public act of assault, that is going to affect whoโs willing to cast him in future work.
Well, Iโve now contributed to the global response in talking about it.

Rock was poking the bear. Sooner or later that bear is going to react.
Really?
Poking a bear over a comment from 6yrs ago?
I hardly think soโฆ.. ๐

Sorry - but LOL - at his raging hormones - more I think the night was for him - in no way - a target for his family.
It was not a ' Roast ' where this is expected and accepted.
He ' slapped ' him for heavens sake - a slap on the chops for being a D*ck - which he was being.
Things really haven't changed - political correctness - knowing the boundaries - is something you deal with knowing yourself - if you wouldn't like it - nor would anyone else.
So don't do or say it.

For those who havenโt seen the full episode leading up to the slap, here it is.
Make no qualms about it, Will Smith is seen laughing at Chris Rocks joke about his wife, UNTIL she decides otherwise.
And ONLY then, did Will Smith decide the comment was out of line and thought that physical assault was the appropriate response!
Followed by a foul mouth. This language is ok for the footy field, or backyard BBQ, but definitely not for a televised black tie event.
( and I am no stranger to hearing or using the F bomb)!
While two wrongs donโt make a right, Will Smith is more in the wrong hereโฆ.
So, now, thatโs my 4cents worth ๐

What Will Smith did was upsetting and difficult to witness for me. Difficult for many to watch, going by the outcry of the general public accounts online.
But it is a reminder that chivalry and honour are not dead. Really? Punching another man over a verbal insensitive comment is a show of chivalry and honour? Hmmm ๐ค
Anybody who chooses to insult another man's wife must accept the consequences. The rules go out the gate. There are lines you do not cross unless you want to risk a hard smack in the mouth. I would say those lines would be hitting on another manโs wife, sending nude pics, coming home to find another man in bed with your wife! (except in this case as it appears the Smiths have an open marriage) but you get where Iโm going with this (I hope) ๐
Of course Will Smith is now regretful because his raging hormones may have affected his reputation and acting career. Orโฆ he is regretful because he might lose his Oscar! Again I sayโฆ hmmmmm ๐ค
The time to truly be regretful and offer an apology, was on stage when he was accepting his Oscar. Will managed to apologise to everyone else, itโs not like he suddenly forgot! He made the choice not to!
But I bet as a man he feels differently.
I don't see Chris Rock as the sole victim. Absolutely. Chris started this train wreck. I hope he learns a lesson from this fiasco!
I see him as a tactless fool who chose the wrong man's wife to bring up with insensitivity, just to get a laugh. He faced the consequences.
Such is life in the male world - best to keep your mouth shut next time. I do agree with this.
(It is also the same in the female world to. ๐)

I take all your points janeababe. But one thing I need to stress is the so called rules and criteria for acceptable behavior differ from man to man. Add testosterone and you have an unpredictable situation that you take on at your own risk. One can judge all they like and say what the person could have, or should have done, but only a brave or foolish person finds out for real. I've got a feeling this is a Venus and Mars thing, but that's ok.

What rules and criteria??? - for acceptable behaviour. - for men - any man.
It's not hard :
