The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 ๐Ÿ™‚

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here ๐Ÿ™‚

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

"..Oh I remember Camphor Ice now...my grandmother swore by it but Mum used Vicks VapoRub. I never noticed any difference, or maybe I was just so miserable with my cold that I didn't care....I was never a good patient..Lyndal"

And my dad who suffered from lumbago (I don't think it's called that anymore)  had a big jar of thick grey paste called antiflogestine (sp?) that had to be heated up until steaming, then applied onto strips of rag and onto his back.   It scared the life out of us kids.  Does anyone remember that?

Yep I do, my grandfather had lumbago and used that grey paste.

My mum had both camphor ice and vicks vapour rub, but I remember the camphor ice more than the vicks.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

I have read all of this thread and it is fantasic. Although I'm a youngin' born 63, I do remember most of what you guys are talking about.

My mum had a marcasite watch with a ridiculously small face. And we still had swapcards and elastics when I went to school.

One thing that no-one has mentioned here is when Chinese restaurants first opened. Our local one provided take-aways if you wanted, however you had to bring your own pots to put it in !!!! I still have not ever found anyone else who remembers that. Maybe someone here will.

And I remember going to the 'health food store' with mum where she would supply a jar to be refilled with peanut butter.

I also remember the carcasses hanging in the butcher shop window. I made such a fuss that I was allowed to stay outside the shop while mum bought the meat. I think this may be why I'm mostly a vegetarian.

Remember the family doctor.......he came to you, not the other way around.

I can still remember the name of our dr, it was Dr. Boar, pronounced Bear, I can still see his face in my mind.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

we sure are JV...but I seem to be the only one thinking so.

Kodak has filed for something to protect them from bankruptcy, while they try to organise their finances.

An update about the Austar installation.

They rang back after the technician left to tell me that they couldn't install the 'upgrade' (which involves going into the ceiling with the shed snake skins) until

I had caught the non existent snake !!!!   LOL

I informed them that we were quite happy with what we had and thanks anyway but no thanks.
