The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Has anybody else noticed that even after over 400 postings, this thread remains warm, friendly, and respectful.  Is it because we have shared history and life experiences?  Or is it the times in which we grew up?

I have enjoyed every post, and getting to know (and like) every poster.

Thank you so much Darki.

It's everything freshwater... we don't want to be disturbed, upset or dislike anyone and our generation of people have learned how to treat eachother - or maybe we were taught when we were young.

It's just nice having somewhere to go where we can relax and just sit back and remember or exchange experiences on how we are coping as we get older 🙂

The idea came to me early one morning, when I was tired and fed up and I needed somewhere nice to be 🙂  xxxx

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Oh how I can relate to that.

On the old M2M board I was answering some questions from a newish member and used the expression "a trap for young players"...she flared back in high dugeon that she was not that young (in her 30s I think) and that she was not playing at anything.  It took quite a bit of explaining on my part that I was not insulting her or being rude.

I though everyone understood that expression....but it did teach me never to use a throw away remark about anything for fear of being misunderstood.

Yikes Lyndal, that's 'a trap from young players' isn't it... using an old expression the Elders would know and understand.  Hadn't thought of that but I think I have done it once or twice and got a sideways look and rolled eyes.

Yep, tiger by the tail... what you'd get if you caught Richo by the tail :^O

What I do love is seeing all the favourite film stars of our generation getting older and feeling they are still there with us.

Someone mentioned Martin Shaw recently and from The Professionals to Judge John Deed and a few other series, it is good to see him aging too... So many of them Dame Judy Dench is another and David Suchet, Maggie Smith, Sean Connery of course.. Remember Dr. No?

The young ones coming up we will still see getting older as we get older yet...

So many of them...

Speaking of old sayings, how about - to Jonah something.

I made this comment to my DIL recently and was met with a blank expression. The funniest part was trying to explain. We both ended up in fits of laughter.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Darki, I live in The Dandenong Ranges in Vic. there is a Tavern just outside of Belgrave and every sunday night they have a band, that plays only rock n roll.

They also have dancers and I would say they are 65yrs of age and can they do the rock n roll...........

Would give anything to be able to still do it like they can......they do it all the time in competitions, so their bones would be quite supple and it would be good exercise as well.

I love rock n roll:-D

Hello rob and welcome here, no wheelchair access tho 😞

Still, come to think of it, you don't need it 🙂

I've seen people do amazing things with wheelchairs, what about those basketball players?

Good to have you on board 🙂

Morning everyone 🙂

Well too early for the old brain to come up with new memories, so will work on it and come back a little later...

Hmm... I can hear the wheels slowly grinding, must oil them :^O
