The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

I've had a box of penicillan in the cupboard for about 6 months...heaps of pills....4  a day....heavens knows why the doc. gave me so many so I took some yesterday and it seems to be settling a bit.  Will ring the dentist on Monday. Will take your advice freshie and rinse with Listerine too. except the tooth is very sensitive to hot and cold at the moment:-(

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

that's such good advice Gill, freshwater reminds me of someone I know who still has lovely and all her teeth at our age.

I am thankful I don't have upper teeth any more although it was due to an accident that I lost them, then almost lost my life when the dentist removed them because under a general anaesthetic he accidently puncutred my throat.

Once tha swelled up I could swallow and neither could I lie down if I wanted to keep breathing 😞  I did want to keep breathing and so ended up in hospital where they pumped me full of penicillin due to the fear of Golden Staph taking hold...

Oh what fun 😞  but of course had it happened 30 years earlier I would have died, so I am not complaining very loud.

Get that tooth fixed false teeth might have many advantages, but being kind to the skin on your gums isn't one of them 😞

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

I was born in 1947 and still have all my faculties, I ride a spin bike and lift weights almost every day, I walk almost every day, I still work over 40 hours a week in my own business. I am not over weight (65kls and 165ccms) and I am stronger then most women 10 years younger then me. I colour my hair because I don't want to be grey, I look after my skin and have few lines.

So why, when I tell someone my age over the phone or when I have to see someone and my age comes up do they suddenly raise there voice, stick their head on one side and think that I may be deaf ? losing my faculties and about to drop off the perch ?

Very annoying.

Keep it nice, I might cry if you write anything upsetting (like not)

Yes I can too newstart.  Welcome here 🙂

I used to work in A&E and one day I was having to admit a woman of 104 to hospital.

I approached her with a smile and bright blue eyes looked up at me.

I started by speaking slowly thinking she might be hard of hearing and wondering if she had her faculties...

She corrected me clearly  "young woman, I am not hard of hearing and I am mentally alert alright?"

My rule?  Never presume :^O

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Tomorrow I have to contend with the woodman 😞

He delivered 4 ½ tons of wood last week but because my back has been painful and I have had to give up gym for a while 😞 I didn't think to check the wood!

Well as it turned out it doesn't burn, it chars... thus it is green.

I tried contacting him several times but got no answer so finally text him and he asked me to ring him... (I don't approve!  He should ring me!)

Well he tried to tell me the wood was just wet from rain, and I found myself facing yet another 38 year old who considers elderly people have never learned anything... bluddy hell!

I have said he either replaces the lot or he comes and splits it so it will dry faster... he wanted money for that!

Okay, so to keep things smooth I said I would pay him a further $100.  His wood is much cheaper than I have been paying, so I allowed for that.

For that he will split and restack the wood - all 4½ tons -so the dryer pieces are to the front... AND I will be there watching him all the time as I teach him that elderly does NOT mean stupid X-(

He will also know that either he toes my line or his name will be mud in the area!

I love blackmail and corruption of the young :^O

Today we had an appt with the Memory Clinic for OH and it's pouring down raining non stop all night...That'd be fine except that the drivers side electric window refused to shut so I expect the seat to be VERY wet.....organised early to have a mechanic jam it shut till it could be fixed......Just got a phone call from the Clinic saying they had a black out and had to cancel the appt. Rayyyyyyyyyy....so not going out today after all...We'll get it fixed "when the weather breaks".
