The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

morning all.....

weekly shopping day.   Must check if Julia has put in the carbon tax sweetener to our a/c yet...if so, we'll be going to lunch!

Anyone remember autograph books?   I thought I posted that yesterday,, but apparently not.

Having trouble with my cleaning person again.  The replacement for the one who went to the mines, left last week to spend more time with her 2 year old.

A new one was supposed to come on Monday and didnt turn up. The agency had double booked her.

So ANOTHER new one came yesterday, managed to bugga up two vacuum cleaners and after about 20 mins said she had to go home cos she was REALLY nauseous  and she'd get them to send someone else??? have yet to hear from agency.

Gilly, I read on my centrelink page that the carbon sweetener was going in with next weeks pension.

I remember the autograph books, I had several when I was young.

I also had swap cards when I was at school, it was a big thing having those.

Remember playing knuckle bones?

They dont have those good things now & the kids today have no idea what fun it was to have the above ^^^^^

I remember fiddlesticks too.

And don't get me onto marbles.  I used to beat all the boys and go home with more marbles than I brought to the game.

Those were the days where you played games sitting on the ground with a group of friends, not in front of a pc

And the new kid in the street became your best friend within 5 minutes.

Darki, our gang discovered the underground tunnels at the military installation at North Head, miles of them which lead to big gun placements on the cliffs.  There were hidden trapdoors in the ground. There were old furnished sleeping quarters throughout.  Whenever guards  turned up we used to run like the clappers,   .

I had a crush on a boy on the bus (17) when I was about 12 or 13.

he wrote in my autograph book....and embarrassed me to bits..

" I love you I love you I love you almighty,

I wish my pyjamas were close to your nighty.

and  not in the bed."

Oh Gilly...that is just so precious.

My mum's autograph book had similar sayings in it.....like "I tried it on the back step, It tried it on the window sill".....it just went on and on (sounding very iffy) but all he was trying to do was to take her photograph.

What was considered very norti in those days seem so innocent now.

I remember finding my mother's copy of "Love Me Sailor" hidden under the couch cushions.  The offending passages referred to touching breasts.  I was appallled.  LOL.

Had an autograph book---cant find it.

But remember asking the gardener at state school

for his autograph in the 1950s.

In the most beautiful hand writing-wrote

A square peg will not fit in a round hole--

neither does myself i fit into society.

You should have run on the cricket fields.

Some of the cricketors autographs are worth a lot of money.

Its only minus 1 here this morning, I am waiting for it to warm up a bit before I put the dust bin out. 

Yes i am still raking the leaves up the back yard is covered in them.  At the front they have blown across the road.
