The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Yeah!  knew it wuz you gillie 🙂

Well I am planning to put my house on the market next September after the family have moved down here.

Have been looking at properties in the Kingston area and I think I'd enjoy being among the burbs again so long as I had a good yard, well fenced for the dorgs.

Need to get up closer to town and away from these neighbours, they are so depressing 😞

While I think of it, I have put up a thread about mobile phones and us gerries... it would save a lot of heart ache and pain if we all carried one for emergencies.

There is no difficulty having one in a pocket and it does mean if you have a fall or become ill you can at least call 000...

Worth a thought or 3?

Afternoon all:-)

So you are thinking of moving Darki?

I could never go and live in the burbs again & besides most of OH's family live here in The Dandenongs, and me, I dont call my rellies family any more.

OH bought me a new fandangle  phone for my last birthday, I can text, answer it and ring someone, and that is as far as it goes. Handy to have in an emergency. I rarely use mine, but I think all old people should have one and know how to ring in an emergency.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

I am a good 30 minutes from the burbs purple... on 5 acres with far neighours that are never there.

My family will be moving down here, hopefully soon, but I think that as I get older and less likely to drive (in my 80s) it would be more convenient to be closer to the shops etc.

I have been out in the stix for about 40 years and love it, but all being equal it might be time to be more sensible.

Good morning Gerries:-)

Darki, I understand, I guess we will all have that decision to make at some stage.

My OH worries about me getting up and down all the stairs we have here, really doesnt help my back at all, some days are better than others.

Darki, it will be alot different to where you are now..........what a shame we all have to get older.

Darki moved from the burbs some 40 + years ago and dont have to move again as we join the gerries as the burbs have caught up to us and we are now back in them again,  not as bad as we are on the fringe and it is still quite nice  however the hills are taking there toll on us so it has become a waiting game to see how long we can last before we have to move to a flatter area..

That can happen too jackass... but here the council has stopped opening up the land and so it will stay rural for some years to come.

It must be sort of frightening to watch the burbs come to you...

Yes, flatter is a necessity.... I went with a friend today to see what she calls 'a flat house'.  It was 'orrible... 8 foot stud and no character, let alone no room to move and no garden.. Jayzus do we really have to live that way?

Yes, hills and stairs... I could live here for ever if that was the problem, but for me it is distance from services and company... Ah well, we all have to think about it sooner or later 😞
