The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

:^O  hahaha  point well made lyndal...

Then again, it could us all very entertained :^O

Well I'll be MIA for a couple of days, I have a big viewing of the property on Sunday that will last a couple of hours.

The woman is 'dropping in on her way home to WA after she has finished business in Queensland'...

She has been keeping a firm eye on the house for some time I believe and I would say must be very keen.  She is bring her video camera with her so she can show it all to her OH when she gets home.

Needless to say I want the place to look pretty good and since the weather has been so strange of late the garden has suddenly grown massive weeds... sooo I am out there gardening flat out.

Anyway I will return 🙂

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Good luck Darkie. Is anyone else peeved off at being put down just because you are now retired and in receipt of an Aged Pension?

I went into the vet this morning, the same one that I have been going to for the last ten years to ask about pet insurance.

I was told by the person on the front desk that her policy was that if you didn't have the cash to pay the vet bills you shouldn't have the right to  have an animal.

I wonder if the same policy applies to younger people who have cars. If they don't have they cash to pay the repair bills, should they have the right to own cars?

Who gives this person the right to say you shouldnt have animals if you dont have the cash to pay vet bill?

It has always been said that having a pet when you are aging is one of the best things, pets bring a lot of love, joy and company for people that live on there own as well as others.

I wouldnt have been able to hold my tongue, I would have told her what I thought on the subject.

Jean, that is awful.  My vet is just the opposite....he recommends pet insurance.  My youngest daughter is a Vet Nurse and every vet she has worked for has recommended it.

I first used it in 1993 for our Westie, and later our Himalayan cat and it was worth its weight in gold.

The dog ended up being on chemotherapy for 11 months before he died, and the cat developed severe respiratory disease which ran up over $4000 in tests and treatment. We received over $3500 in benefits for the cat alone.

Our animals were insured at the highest rate...it was costing about $400 a year in premiums. Even when we did not have a major expense such as the chemo, we always came out ahead. By the time both animals had died I worked out that we had received $10,000 more in benefits than we had paid in premiums.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

I must admit that I was fuming when I got home. We have signed up on line this afternoon, strangely enough with one of the big supermarket chains. We pay just under $15 per fortnight which is for a comprehensive cover including ticks and all sickness and accident. A little expensive, but on the whole I think worth it.

Jean, have a look at your policy and see who the Underwriter is.

There is a good chance that it is The Hollard Insurance Company....they seem to have the monopoly on Pet Insurance and are the underwriters of several policies including the RSPCA and the Medibank Private policies.

We dealt with them directly as there were very few pet insurances around back in the early 90s.

It is quite interesting to see the different premiums and conditions on the different policies when they are all underwritten by the same company.

Do you think you will have problems getting your vet to fill out the claim forms for you?
