The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Reading through all the posts makes me realise how much the world has changed.

I wouldn't have missed my childhood and the life experiences I have gained for quids.  We have lived in that world and in the present world......few have.

Somebody once asked me if I had "'lived here all my life"....I replied "not yet".

It certainly was different back then and many, many happy memories.

I wish I could have brought my kids up in a generation like that, instead of the world it is today.

Life was simple and the world was a nicer place to live in.

Well darki, I prefer to just listen to the telly whilst doing something else - knitting, sewing, crochet, playing card games, scrabble or monopoly, on the laptop - MH would say: you're not watching this & I would say: I don't have to, then he would ask me who is who, or what is what, because he lost the plot & I could tell him, even though I hadn't been watching!

Do they still do the Canadian Barn Dance freddie? I met MH at a dance in 1965, then my heart sank when I saw him doing the CBD, which I sat out, but after that he came to me for the next dances & took me home. Afterwards, we both said it was love at first sight! Sounds corny, eh?

Used to be Boy Scout Bob a Job days - gave our parents & grandparents a chance to have the yard cleaned up, or firewood stacked, or gardens weeded, really cheap, & the Boy Scouts were happy to do it, too.

Keng - was it you about the green snake? We recently had a blue tongue lizard, on two separate occasions, visit us, inside our home. Gosh they can wriggle & he/she did his business on the carpet! Cleaned up ok though - just as well. (Big hug back).

Fresh - when you mentioned how we used to ask to leave the table, it caused me to remember, when I didn't want to eat my vegies, I was put outside the back door, & not allowed in until I promised I would eat them. We learnt the hard way!

Night all, agw, jb.

Can vividly remember that when a man came to the table to eat no matter how hot or how hard hed been working that there was no way a singlet was allowed at the table a shirt had to be put on for the duration of the meal.......bought my son up the same way as well.......also to be dressed decently if one went out anywhere.......no going out in pjs as we see here from time to time looks so lazy and horrible:(

Yes Purple, I think so too.

And I think the values and  behaviour taught to children remain with them the rest of their lives.

There are so many mature aged  people out there, with a fully functioning brain just getting on with their lives, with courtesy and care for others, not having lost their enthusiasm and sense of fun, and with a lifetime of experiences behind them (they have seen and heard it all before LOL).

A bit off subject.....There is not one thing I have ever wanted to do in my life that I haven't done, both personally and career.

Not one place on earth where  I have wanted go that I haven't been to.   Yep, I am one hell of a lucky gal,

When some come across a mature aged person they fail to realise they were once young too, and what they have done with  their lives, what they have quietly achieved and what they have survived with pure fortitude and courage..

I am still stunned by some of the stories, and I am so thrilled to hear them..

Yes the old tredles and my mother also had a Singer sewing machine with the lever by her knee.  She taught me to sew on that, although my grandmother also taught me on her tredle.
