Re: The koala cull

No, I imagine as habitats decrease and animal colonies become more isolated inbreeding would become a problem.

I wonder how the dingo population on Fraser gets on. It's supposedly the most pure of the breed but it would have to be showingthe effects of inbeeding  by now whouldn't it?

Re: The koala cull

You'll get in trouble for that comment.

Oh, on second thoughts they have 'selective' outrage so you'll be allowed to get away with it.

Rules don't apply to certain women.

I'll put money on it that you won't get Publicly criticised for it.

Re: The koala cull

Once again the reason these problems occur is because of actions taken by people without any thought fir the consequences. Thus we are left to continue actions to control these earlier actions that were mistakenly made. Kangaroo island South Australia had no koalas and in the 1920 a group of scientists relocated a population of koalas from the mainland. Now culling of the koalas has to be performed to prevent a total collapse if the koalas. This is a highly contentious and emotive action but as far as I'm concerned it doesn't go far enough, all koalas in Kangaroo island should be removed or culled as they are an introduced pest. Plain and simple. Doesn't matter how cute and cuddly something is an introduced species is a pest and needs to be addressed

KI - which is the example I used before and a very good example of the consequences, except they seem to have jumped on it earlier.

The general public hasn't got a clue what goes on in the real world, all they see are cute and cuddly Koala's, Kangaroos (which are so prolific compared to history because of man it isn't funny) and when they hear of a cull, go ballistic.

Re: The koala cull

Strangely Adelaide is seeing an increasing koala population and scientists cannot explain why. So there was no need to destroy the total environment of KI. I was recently in Adelaide and nearly hit a big male koala crossing the road in the middle of Elizabeth right near the big shopping centre.
Someone earlier posted that Victorian koalas should be relocated in QLD. This is impossible as the QLD koala is smaller and has a less dense fur. Victorian koalas would just die of heat stroke but obviously to the unthinking mob that would never enter their heads they are too busy jumping up and down criticizing the cull

Interesting re SA.

Having seen a few mass deaths, one thing I will say is one of THE worst ways to die is by starvation and by way of that,

thirst on the basis of they get so weak that they can't walk to water (excluding Koala's of course).

Re: The koala cull

Koala is an indigenous word, I'm not sure from which language but it means no drink. They are actually able to get all their liquid requirements from the leaves they eat if the tree they are in isn't in distress. Another reason to control their population

They are "showing the effects of inbreeding".  They are staying breed pure.
