Rob Oakeshott to quit politics
Wednesday, June 26, 2013 07:16am
Key federal independent Rob Oakeshott will quit politics at the September 14 election.
The member for the New South Wales seat of Lyne has told his local newspaper the time is right to retire after being in federal parliament for five years, and 17 years in public life.
He told the Port Macquarie News now is the moment, and he's done everything he said he was going to do.
He says it's not an issue of running at the upcoming election and losing.
The federal member for Lyne has told his local newspaper he will not contest the September 14 election, saying he wants to spend more time with his family and had achieved his goals in parliament.
'Now is the moment,' he told the Macleay Argus on Wednesday.
'I have done everything I said I was going to do and done the best I can.'
Mr Oakeshott has held the New South Wales north coast seat of Lyne for five years and denies his decision was prompted by fear of losing his seat at the upcoming federal election.
He says there's no question the past three years have been the toughest of his life, and he accepts some of his critics would suggest he was running away from the challenge.
He says those who throw opinions around and try to bully and push members of parliament from the sidelines are nothing.
Witness the antics of a gutless wonder.
He was one of the people who delivered Australia into the hands of this pathetic government.
Now that the writing is on the wall he cuts and runs, unwilling to face the wrath of the electorate.

The fact remains that he has chosen to cut and run without facing the electorate for his actions. A decent man would have done that. Decent people stand up for what they believe in, Robbo just cuts and runs. Pathetic

So? He was elected, and he did the 3 years, which he committed himself to, and now will do something else - after 17 years in politics. He did nothing that could be described as having "lack if intestinal fortitude". Lack if intestinal fortitude would have been doing the obvious and supporting TA, which would have been the easy way for him. Lack if intestinal fortitude would be quitting before the 3 years were up.
Actually, when I saw the title of this topic, I thought that "lack if intestinal fortitude" will refer to TA not wanting 3 debates with Julia Gillard. 🙂

Windsor is now the same and like the rat he is he is deserting the sinking labor ship and will not contest the next election.
Both do NOT have the intestinal fortitude to face their electorates

Lakey my sweetie you forgot your warning for your posts..... 🙂
years of abuse from rednecks (and a death threat or two from right -wing loonies) is enough to make anyone want out.. he seems like a decent chap, he's no stonewall like some of those old codgers from the nationals who only think about liquid lunches and shafting each other.
its a bad day for the locals alright.

Oakshott & Windsor will not be missed.
Windsor is consumed with deep bitterness & hatred that is frightening. A vile little man who deliberately set out to defy his electorate & deliver us into the hands of Gillard & Labor that has seen this country brought down.
Oakshott is a buffoon who was Windsor's puppet. They will go down in infamy just like this Labor party & the term they presided over.
As for the sick making farewell oaky; Well may we say God save us but nothing is going to save these 2 rats from the vitriol of the electorate they so justly deserve.

Totally agree with you Super. This man has given 17 years of his life to the public, good on him for deciding to focus his energies on a new path in life. I wish him the very best.
