There's a possum in my chimney.

for the last 3 nights. I don't think he's stuck because it's quiet during the day and he'll only faff about for a hour or so about midnight then it's quiet. He is just behind the damper. He keeps trying to push it open and my kitties line up in front of the fireplace waiting waiting waiting ....  😮

Can possums find their own way out of the chimney?

I am NOT going to open the damper. I value my face too much. 😐

brushtail, at a guess..

if you're thinkin' the thing is stuck, 'ang some rope down for it to climb

while the thing is gone, get some chicken wire secured over the hole.

We use to have one that lived in our chimney too, OH got sick of it being there, and waited till night and after it left to go out for food, put wire over the top of the chimney, so it couldnt get back in, had no problems since.

Is there such a thing as a possum catcher?

Then it could be relocated?

You could ring WIRES and ask them  if they don't do it they maybe able to point you in the right direction

Thanks for the replies 🙂

I've thought of phoning WIRES. The possum isn't stuck, he must be able to find his way out okay. It just makes me a little nervous to hear a possum in my fireplace.

We live in a two storey house so getting up on the roof myself just isn't do-able but if I suspect the possum needs help I'll call WIRES.

There are possum catchers who will relocate them but they

would be costly.  If you think the possum needs rescuing you could

try Wildlife Rescue emergency on 1300 94535,

or 0500 540 000 though I don't know how responsive

they would be in the weekend, but it's worth a try.

Good luck.

Look at it this way cat... it can't get out and sooner or later it will die and stink the house out, so better to get WIRES or shut the cats away and open the damper..

it won't attack you, just make sure there is a door open so it can rush out and away 🙂

It ain't interested in you it wants OUT
