Is it an exhaust fan? Does the fan switch off when you turn the light switch off? If it does, then the two are connected and I think the only way to fix it (if you need to) is have them separated by an electrician. But is it necessary, there are advantages in having it set up that way?

It just occurred to me that some bathroom switches are set up so e.g. first click for lights, second click for fan and third click for light + fan. Dunno if your switch might be similar?

I think in a family with young kids my father appreciated the separate toilet where he occasionally retired for some peace and quiet, armed with a good book or a magazine...and of course the door could be locked.
One example of bad design were some houses built in the 60s (all very similar) with a separate toilet at the end of a passage....where the other end was the front door. Before the era of really effective security screens (supamesh etc) in hot weather you might open the solid front door but keep the screen door locked. Then there's a knock at the door....and the home owner is in the loo. What to do? You can be clearly seen exiting the toilet by any visitor. Things were more private in those days. Our house was a different design but some neighbours railed against whoever it was that came up with such a stupid placement of the toilet. I've also seen a house where the toilet and bathroom are directly off the lounge. I think it's fine for the home occupants but it is not good for visitors, social events etc.

Definitely a feature to combat mould. Without that fan (and also if the fan isn't regularly cleaned) mould is very likely. It's the same setup in the bathrooms/toilets where I work, particularly as the windows are very high and can't be opened.
Are you able to make changes to the place? A good option is an IXLTastic. Best to have an electrician to install it but they are nifty things. My bathroom had one light above the vanity and just a ceiling vent above the shower. Mould soom became an issue. I left the old vent in place but got an electrician to install the Tastic in the middle of the ceiling. It has 3 switches - light, room heating globes and an extractor fan. As for the original bathroom light. It looked pretty silly but was expensive to remove (electrics, plastering, paint) so I had it replaced with a small ceiling recessed light. It's only small but very handy when you only want to use the vanity area.

Yes I do realize it's an exhaust fan, I've always had one where I've lived but it's always come on separately from a separate switch. Oh dear, so it seems I',ll need an alectrician to put in another switch? See I like to stand for hours in front of the mirror admiring myself and don't want a fan going all the time.
Jokes aside not much there to admire but guess I'll put up with it for now.
btw the toilet is in the bathroom, I didn't know it mattered that much.
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions.

Brighton If you dont need the exhaust fan, you can have it disconnected and just use the switch for the light .... Depends whether you need to use the fan or not ...... We never used ours, so hubs just disconnected it
Dont think having the loo in b/room is a big issue, cant say it has ever bothered me at all ......
