Are We Descending Into Barbarism?

An Australian socialist group has withdrawn newspapers depicting Tony Abbott getting his throat cut by a straight razor.

The grisly Red Flag cover, which was accompanied by the headline "One cut we'd like to see, attracted more than 200 comments – most of them negative – on publisher The Socialist Alternative's Facebook page overnight.

"Oh ... not cool. I'm no fan of the LNP — policies, parties, associates or leader — but this seems unnecessarily violent," one post read.

Another said: "dreadful picture. DO NOT CONDONE violence to anyone. Even Abbott. You LOST me off this page and as a supporter."

The group released a statement this morning defending the Michael Callaghan-inspired cover, but said "legal concerns" meant they would be withdrawing it all the same.

How long before we become like the US and the Middle East where democratically elected leaders are deposed and/or assassinated?

Not any of it should be defended no matter which side of politics you support.  As I posted before, this is disturbing and to defend it is barbarism  partisanship writ large.

I would never defend any type of cut throat graphic or any other graphic and one on here was addicted to posting the most appalling graphics of PM Abbott and any other Lib.

I think you are wasting your time trying to get a point across. Suffice to say trhere are some on here who will not defend it no matter what side of politics they are from and good on them. Woman Happy

this is not what governments are doing to discredit each other.

This about the lengths feral, fringe-dwelling minority political groups will to in order to whip their supporters into a frenzy of murder and mayhem.

In the case of that foul GWAR clip, to whip anyone into a frenzy of bloodlust in the name of entertainment.

I think you said it correctly: feral, fringe-dwelling minority political groups. Would be barely noticed by the population.Fringe dwellers rarely are.

But sadly for Labor it is not the MINORITY media groups that suggested they should be drowned, beheaded or dressed them like Hitler etc. It was the MAJORITY media groups.

So I seriously don't believe your outrage is justified given what this country has had to endure for the last 5-6 years.

Many posters have graphics and post them on here so If I say I have heaps of graphics I mean "google is your friend"" and anybody can access any graphic to fit the subject.

Why are you not surprised?   beats me!.

I support the fact that debased actions and lunatic publications are beyond the pale from any source from either side of the political spectrum and should be called out for it.

Saying worse was done to Gillard is patently false and doesn't in any way excuse what's happening now.

The boiling  hate and the war cry from the left has been breathtaking to say the least and can't be compared in any way to the reaction from the country to the failures of Gillard and Rudd and what they put the country through for 6 agonising years and Australians are still suffering from the failed legacies and paying for the failed Labor experiment.

So outrage and disgust is warranted for this behaviour otherwise we are all the poorer as human beings for it.

You got that bit right. The Rudd/Gillard/Rudd farce of a government was so hard to take, the Australian voters couldn't bear to vote them in again and helped pave the way for the government we currently have.

Having said that, I don't condone the threat of violence toward any head of state and am shocked to see that certain ppl think such threats are ok.

They weren't ok to Ms Gillard and they're not ok now.
