I find it embarrassing that we accuse our mp's of being a misogynist when this is what is happening to women in other countries.

I know this will be a shock but I actually get where you are coming from.

It goes beyond misogyny though, even extreme misogyny.

and yes, next time a woman cries misogyny when she feels belittled by a man maybe she could spare a moment to feel lucky that hurt feelings is pretty much the extent of her persecution.

The Canberra Times reports he said:

“I am giving the Prime Minister an opportunity to redeem herself. I am giving the Prime Minister an opportunity to make an honest woman of herself … to overcome the honesty deficit that she currently displays.”

The Cambridge Idioms dictionary explains:

make an honest woman of somebody (humorous)
if a man makes an honest woman of someone that he is having a relationship with, he marries her You’ve been living with Jean for five years, isn’t it time you made an honest woman of her?

And Wiktionary:

to make an honest woman
(idiomatic, informal, now, usually with “of”) To marry (a woman), especially if she is having a sexual relationship.

I thought about just asking Rosalyn to move in with me, but I decided it was time to make an honest woman out of her.

Perhaps this was a Freudian slip by Abbott but in the context of personal sledging in Parliament House corridors by Chris Pyne and Joe Hockey, it does suggest that the Coalition is deliberately targeting the PM in a strongly personal way.

It’s an awkward and somewhat old-fashioned expression, at best. Speaking to protest gatherings full of enthusiastic people can often provoke excitable remarks from those roped in to addressing them.

Given how far the Coalition is ahead in the polls, the heavily personal tactics are a perplexing and gratuitous approach from which they cannot gain, in our view.

no.. it is not political point scoring..

when you keep saying that people on here are misogynists that makes me angry..

Cheapening the word...

This is not just murder.. it is a culture of hating and undervaluing women. Of seeing them as possessions that you have control over and feel you have the right control.

Yes, it is cheap political point scoring, part of the ongoing campaign to convert us to seeing the "LNP light", similar to the bold red text the other day.

Who is saying there are misogynists on here?

I haven't heard anyone say it, although I would not disagree that there is a couple here.

No, people who deny the problem are cheapening the concept. People who insist we should not stand up for women in Australia because women in other parts of the world suffer more harm.

As you can observe, we have plenty of people here who live within "a culture of hating and undervaluing women. Of seeing them as possessions that you have control over and feel you have the right control."

Then why link the two?  Just as in all forms of abuse there are variations of severity.  That doesn't mean one is misogyny and another isn't.  You weaken your argument against this atrocity by bring into it the local political situation.

The whole OP was about bringing local political situation into it.

should all consider how lucky we are that our girls won't be shot for dancing in the street.

There is absolute truth in that, we should, and I think most would.

But consider looking at it this way. Husband A verbally abuses his wife on a regular basis (and please understand I'm not accusing anyone of anything here, it's hypothetical), Husband B beats his wife, eventually to death. Now of course Husband B's actions are horrific and publishable but that doesn't mean Husband A is innocent just because his abuse is not as extreme does it.

if women had more value men on rape charges wouldn't get early parole and be given the chance to kill.

has anyone noticed the same people who may talk about rape in a way that suggest they may ask for it,shouldn't wear what she was wearing, been where she was...

expressed outrage recently when it was rape AND

Murder

Gillard's speech made headline around the world and that little girl was an afterthought.

Not on the news I saw she wasn't. She was hailed around the world as a hero.
