To Gloss or not

We are due to have new kitchen benchtops put in. I have found the Laminex of my dreams, it is a high gloss white marble surface.

We have a very small kitchen with limited natural light.

The kitchen maker says that gloss benchtops are a very bad choice and I should opt for a matt finish.  They are nice but deadly dull and boring.

I asked OH for his views and he said that as long as the food continues to come out of the kitchen he is not interested. Big help!

Any views for or against gloss tops.

But on saying all of the above, laminate tops are cheap and can be easy to replace. Just make sure they tile the splashback BEFORE they put the benchtop on (They don't like doing this but you can insist).

That way if the benchtop is a disaster it is simply a case of uncrewing the top, removing it and replacing it with a new one. The average kitchen costs around $500 to replace.

Re: To Gloss or not

Back in the 80's, we had a gloss laminate benchtop (you know, the avocado green/ orange/yellow era).

I used car polish to rejuvenate them.

When we built this house probably nearly 10 years ago I chose a high gloss marble for my bathroom vanity and a matte marble for the boys bathroom because I thought they would make more mess.

I wish I had used a gloss one in their room too because mine always looks clean no matter how messy I get and theirs shows every mark.  The gloss must be light diffusing and looks cleaner.

In the kitchen, they will both stain if you are not careful.

Gloss saves a lot of cleaning time & if your kitchen is low light the more gloss the better.

You are the one to satisify so stick to what you want.

I'm pretty sure that Martini was talking about replacing the bench tops.  Not the whole kitchen.
