A reminder of the debt that Australia has, while Labor can bury their heads and deny it exists the fact remains we have a huge problem with debt and sooner than later the chips will fall, no business, no state and no country can keep operating in the red, eventually those we own the money to will own us. Who will own us?
The state of Qld has debt of $80 billion dollars, Labor are saying they don’t think it’s that bad, Bill Shorten on Australia’s debt, there is no debt crisis, there is a crisis and we are in this situation because of Labor, no one else and the bottom line is Labor can’t fix this problem, their speciality is creating debt not fixing debt.

why does the LNP need to spend $12 billion on jets, 20 billion on subs and 400million per year on metadata storage when they claim we are in an emergency situation??

aren't they over-spending?

There is such a thing as national security.

We can't rely on throwing spears and boomerangs.

We need a secure defence force, under Labor they bankrupted the defence force, our troops were freezing overseas through lack of blankets.

Bringing up defence procurement is appalling but a common mantra. Defence spending has been utilized for decades by both sides of government to buy votes in South Australia.

It's about time the mendicant states of SA and Tas got their act together instead of bleeding the other states dry.

Why did Labor spend $billions on pink batts then spend $billions taking them out and we are still paying $billions for the  remedial  work.  Labors incompetence? no it's much worse than that,  it's criminal murder, they killed 4 young men, we can never bring them back.

But not to worry you got your free batts eh.

As if they give a toss about workplace deaths, unless they can gain political mileage out of it.

Would you mind providing some sort of proof to back up your claim that Labor spent billions pulling out the insulation that was installed, please?  And a bit about the billions that you claim is still being spent?   That sounds a bit like fibs.

Great article from Janet Albrechtsen, I have been wondering myself why don’t Australians seem to be too worried about the massive debt the country has and why are they not interested in paying down the debt.

The media just don’t focus on the debt, they focus on lies and spin and the public lap it up and grab everything they can get for free. Concern for kids and grandkids don’t seem to be on the agenda for people anymore, why is this?

Have we become that selfish that we don’t care about our families, I just don’t understand why we have this thought process.

The Prime Minister came to office 17 months ago with the right instincts about structural reforms to fix the federal budget.

To be sure, mistakes have been made, but last week a contrite Tony Abbott said: “We are determined to work for you, the people, who elected us.”

If it’s fair to censure the government for errors on the reform front, we should be equally straight shooting about the chief reason reform has stalled in this country.

We, the people, are one of the biggest hurdles for a reforming government.

According to record low polls for the government, we, the ¬people, have told the Abbott government it will be obliterated at the next election for aiming for a budget that spends only as much as it earns.

We have said we don’t much care about paying $100 million a day interest on our borrowings.

Incredibly insightful article but the left don’t want to hear it.

Shirten should at least make some utterance on how he intends to try to pay down this massive debt.

If labor win the next election they will,

for the very first time, inherit their own debt, then all hope is lost.

Tony Abbott scrapped the carbon tax and  Joe Hockey scrapped the minerals resource rent tax which would have brought in some revenue , at least and they kept on spending.

Their attempts at gaining revenue through exploitation of the less well off in society were not passed in the Senate.

Tax the rich, Joe and Tony . . they can afford it. Don't make education and healthcare unaffordable for the poor. tell your mates in the big end of town to pull their weight and stop leaning on the rest of us taxpayers.

Have we become that selfish that we don’t care about our families working class and poorer Aussie citizens? I just don’t understand why the LNP have this thought process and still expect to hold on to govt.

The Prime Minister came to office 17 months ago with lies on his lips and the  right really devious and nasty instincts about structural reforms to fix the federal budget, by exploiting the poor.

To be sure, mistakes have been made, he has been called out his lies but last week a contrite  duplicitous Tony Abbott said: “We are determined to work for you, persist with our lies and double-dealings to coninue in our attempts to fool the electorate into voting for us again.

it's 17% ( uni fee writedowns, out of %100%)

there wouldn't be too many students who purposely set out to "rip off the education system"" but quite often the jobs just aren't there for graduates. some kids go to uni straight from school, and discover that it isn't for them by their 2nd year and end up leaving and getting poorly paid jobs. Perhaps they should lower the wages threshold on repayment of HECS fees instead of increasing uni fees?

It will be lowered .

The compulsory repayment threshold for the 2014‑15 income year is $53,345.

A new minimum repayment threshold for HECS will be introduced from the 2016‑17 income year (1 July 2016‑30 June 2017). In that year, graduates will commence repaying their HECS debt once their income reaches an estimated $50,638.

If they lowered the threshold to say $40 000 ( which can be a starting salary for a graduate), income tax to pay on that  + HECS repayments( 4-8% depending on income), rent could be $20000 a year , ($385 approx per week).. leaves less than $20 000 a year to live on.

With the proposed increase in Uni fees (last Budget) it would take a male graduate with a nursing degree 34 years to pay their student debt off.

Higher Education - it's worth it!   Sure!

FORMER Prime Minister John Howard says Tony Abbott’s political career is akin to a low golf handicap.

Speaking at the Women’s Australian Open charity dinner at Royal Melbourne, Howard responded to a question by host Kerri-Anne Kennerley.

“If you were giving him a handicap and looking at his political performance over the last five years you’d give him a low mark in golfing terms because he after all won an election and almost won the first one,’’ said Howard who was representing charity Soldier On.

“In straight political performance terms his golfing handicap would be a lot better than mine.

“It’s something people should keep in mind before they start marking him too severely.”

Howard, who served as Australia’s second longest PM from 1996 to 2007, said Abbott needed to make his own decisions.

“In the end you are your own best coach when you get to that position. Advisers are important and you should listen to advice, but in the end you’ve got to follow your own instinct.

I had good advisers but I made my own decisions and it’s the only way you can do it.

And that applies to all people in public life, in business.”

John Howard's not looking too bad for an old codger and Kerry-Anne Kennerly's holding her age well too.
