What are they?
Why do people want it?
Why do people need it?
How does it compare with what we have now?
How will it benefit us compared to what we have now?

I heard an item on radio that NBN will enable 1 million old people to stay in their homes, rather than go into care, thereby saving taxpayers 4 billion dollars.
The medical and educational benefits for the population are the most important IMO.

Do you understand how the internet will help people stay in their homes???
I find it very concerning... remote locking doors to ensure people can't get out was one of the ideas.... if you need remote locking doors then you need someone with you... the internet will never be entrusted to mind one of my family members...
I heard this on the Tv and was very shocked... having known a lovely lady (my sisters mother in law) that was a wanderer... I can tell you now that internet babysitting is not going to work...
And I like the idea of the NBN... I just wonder if we can afford it... that is my only concern...

What rubbish!
If old people need residential care, they will be in residential care. It will help those people before they get to that level.

There's bound to be some good as well as bad suggestions for the use of this technology. there are also some companies who will attempt to replace staff at every opportunity .. even if it entails risks. these things will come up, so its possibly going to be neccessary to ensure nobody abuses the technology in pursuit of a quick dollar or ease of operation. i can see the privatised prisons using remote locking to save money also. like all things it is neccessary to remain vigilant to ensure bad outcomes don't happen as a result.

the technology can also be used to ensure such abuses do not occur.

That's looking for the ridiculous.
It means blood pressure and sugar level monitoring what ever day to day monitoring people need. It means people can return home sooner after surgery or illness as they will be able to be monitored remotely, both by home care services and distance services.
It will enable comprehensive physiotherapy programs where people can access the service as needed rather than as able to. It means exercise programs for older people to maintain their fitness levels. It will facilitate group activities and be used in treating depression and other mental illnesses.
There are hundreds of ideas and applications and to pick out random stuff like auto locking doors to pick out the perceived downfall is clutching for straws. If these are the problems NBN sounds like a dam good alternative to me.

I think it's not a matter of why an individual personally needs the NBN but why Australia needs to modernize it's speeds (both now and long term) to keep up with the technology of the rest of the world, that won't wait for Australia to catch up.

One reason why I would like NBN is so I will stop being a laughing stock when it comes to my Asian counterparts.
We are all training and testing a new shared accounts system and it is so embarrassing when we have remote training and Japan, Chine, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia and India all have to wait for me while my system loads. The training is from 10am to 4.30pm and I reckon we could probably have completed the days schedule about 1 to 1.30 hours earlier if they did not have to keep waiting for me to catch up.
I have spoken to our local IT person and there is nothing more he can do, they have upgraded my PC and we have the fastest speeds available but we are still lagging behind.
I also think copper is going to become a real issue in the near future as it is becoming a sought after product and theft of copper is on the increase.
