The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster continues to draw new acolytes with a Queensland tradie forgoing a driver's licence to express his religious beliefs.
Brisbane renderer Simon Leadbetter has been unable to drive for almost two months after the state's Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) refused to renew his licence because he insisted on being photographed with a colander on his head.
Simon Leadbetter is a Pastafarian and he believes his rights are being violated because he cannot express his faith through his religious headdress in his licence photo.
"I'm a devout member of the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and I have a right to wear a colander just like Sikhs wear turbans," the 31-year-old told ninemsn.
"Just because they don't understand my religion doesn't mean I should be persecuted. I don't understand why I am being discriminated against.

A man who wears a sieve on his head for religious reasons has been allowed to wear his bizarre headgear on his official identity card.
Prankster Lukas Novy, from Brno in the Czech Republic, claims that his Pastafarian faith means he has to wear the sieve at all times.
Officials ruled that turning down Novy's request would be a breach of the country's religious equality laws.
Fellow pastafarian Niko Alm won a case in Austria when officials objected to the sieve on his head for his driving licence photograph.
It took Alm three years to get the license, after arguing that the sieve was a requirement of pastafarianism.

Sydney university science student Preshalin Moodley was last month able to obtain a provisional driver's license with a colander on his head.
"After the test I asked if I was able to wear religious headwear and she (the woman at the Roads and Maritime Services) said yes," Mr Moodley said.
"I pulled out the colander, put it on my head and she just took the photo."

i think other states need to getwith the program
They allow "religious headwear" in your license photo but not glasses??????
My OH would be as blind as a bat without his glasses (has to wear them all the time) but had to take them off for his photo....it does not look like him at all.
DD only wears glasses for driving and it is endorsed on her license but again no glasses in the photo.

yes i had my licence renewed recently.
Can I wear glasses when I have my photo taken?
You are required to remove your glasses or sunglasses to have your photograph taken.
Can I wear any head attire when I have my photo taken?
You must remove your hat or cap. If you wear headwear for religious reasons, it must be adjusted so that all facial features from the bottom of your chin to top of your forehead (including both edges of your face) are clearly shown.
Can I smile when I have my photo taken?
When you have your photo taken, you will be asked to maintain a neutral expression with your mouth closed.

Yes, I know Julia.....OH renewed his license in May.
I was staggered to say the least of it. It stands to reason that sunglasses are not allowed but in the past it was mandatory to be photographed in glasses if you normally wear them for driving.
OH has 6 different ID passes for various government departments (just to get to the mail room) and they all required him to be wearing glasses if that is what he would be wearing when delivering.

Which state are those rules for?
I've got a smile and glasses on my licence photos, on all 3 of them.

i suppose it makes sense.
all facial features should be clearly
visible and with the different types
of eyewear these days, half of your
face could be covered by thick frames.
change your frames and you could look
very different.
karlia - these current rules are in nsw.
my previous licence has a photo with
glasses on. and a weird smile.

Yes the rules in NSW had changed when I went to get my new licence in 2012
Previous to that you could be smiling and with glasses.
