Tradies - disposal of stuff

You get a tradie in to fix or replace something, you ask (in advance) that they take all the old stuff away with them....and they agree.

Then you find that apparently this promise only applies to extremely large items.  The rest has been jammed in your household waste wheelie bin on the tradie's way out  Grrrrrrr.  Or the alternative is...if the bits and pieces are not to be put on the recycle or garden waste bins then that's where they will be.

Is there a solution for this issue?  I don't have any extra storage space (ie no shed or garage). I don't want to get in trouble with the council, and I'm not at all impressed to find my bin is already sometimes already more half full when I go to put rubbish in it.

Re: Tradies - disposal of stuff

I do not mind if tradesmen put any small debris into the correct bin, as long as they take away anything anything that would be hassle for me to dispose of.  If somebody does dozen of jobs in a day, if they came home with every bit of broken glass their ute would be full by the end of the day, not to mention it would be dangerous to drive with it.  Although he should have asked for some newspapers to wrap the broken glass in before he put it in the bin.

I thought todays tradies just left in the back of the ute/truck while they raced about untill it had all fallen off. 🙂

If my OH brought home the debris from a 'small' job I would be unhappy. Your job, your rubbish. Sorry. On bigger jobs the owner provides a skip or arranges for removal of demolition materials.

There is give and take though. If a small job is for a regular, he rarely charges them. By small I mean taking a little off the bottom of a sticking door, or fixing a screen or a lock. How do you charge a good customer for a half hours work? You don't.

BUT the poster asked if the rubbish would be taken away.  The tradesman said that he would.

Do you normally fill your bins weekly? Or just annoyed that a bit of rubbish was put in them?

Re: Tradies - disposal of stuff

We have the problem of tradies emptying their van/truck full of rubbish in our dumpster, which is for 22 units and is filled to the brim twice a week by us.

You might have a plumber come to one unit to fix up a tap or something similar and then they dump all their stuff on us.

Once a tradie empties his rubbish there is no room for any of us with household rubbish.

I have a vigilante mindset if I see a van anywhere near the dumpster and am prepared to hobble at high speed once they look around to see if anyone is watching.

A few tradies have had to put up with me (and others) rolling the dumpster in front of their van or truck while using a rake to hook their rubbish out for them to put back in their van.

Someone else here had the bright idea to hide a rake near the bin so that anyone catching a tradie would be able to get the rubbish back out of the dumpster.

Yes I did read that. There is no obligation on a tradie to act as a waste disposal service though. A lot of them are self employed (as is my OH) They don't have skips at home to deal with debris. Just the same bins that the OP has. Was it expected that sawdust, wood chips, plaster dust etc would be taken away?  If so, that is not reasonable. He took large items, I would be thankful for that, and work around the small stuff. When you buy a new fridge, computer, microwave, washing machine, bed etc do the old ones get removed by the retailer? Not usually, so why should a tradesman be expected to dispose of rubbish?

Re: Tradies - disposal of stuff

Maybe the tradie should have included rubbish removal in the quote.

Yes, the fridge, washing machine, bed and stove have all been removed by the retailer or should I say their delivery/installer people.
