Transporting Mirrored Cabinets

Hi All,

Just asking for some advice re transporting 2 large china cabinets (each has 2 reflective mirrors in the back). The mirrors MAY be able to be removed, but I was hoping I could transport them (interstate) with the mirrors intact, or is that asking for trouble? I thought about taping the mirrors crosswise,  but that wouldn't necessarily prevent them from being broken. Hubby says to leave them in...its an each way bet on breakage anyway.  Any opinions appreciated.

We moved a 1930's glass backed and shelved china cabinet.

We covered the back mirror with bubble wrap and the three glass shelves we lifted them up and covered with bubble wrap and again stuck bubble wrap on the door panels.

We made one big mistake on the door panels and used sticky tape to hold the wrap down. We found out later that we should have put a couple of octopus straps around the cabinet and wrap.

Thanks for answering. The octopus straps sounds like a good idea. I will also bubble wrap the back glass. Cheers

Yes, bubble wrap on the outside, and   pieces of strong cardboard  over the bubblewrap.  That would help to absorb and dissipate any impact.  I am assuming you will be getting removalists; to make sure they are careful put sign on the outside "fragile, mirror in cabinet".  So they know anytime they come near it that it has to be handled with care.

And you can fill the cabinet with cussions or pillows.

i wouldn't move them in a small trailer, they break so easily. if they have legs i'd have 3 different types of foam under them (from soft to firm foam rubber in cake style layers ) to absorb shock as much as possible. the idea of bracing the mirrors from inside as others mention is probably the way to go for the inside unless the mirrors can be removed easily. if they can transporting them is easier, but the risk of breaking them is still quite high.
