Accidents happen but seriously, dams don't need to be fenced, house yards/gardens do.... properly, if you have a dam nearby and small children. This happened a few k's from us last night and it is heartbreaking. ๐ but preventable.

unfenced dam blamed!!!
what nonsense, since when do farmers fence their dams?
the dam sneaked up and swallowed the child, so the dam needs to be fenced in?
more likely mother and step father are at fault.

Don't say that Bump. It's too easy to lay blame afterwards.

Mr Lynch yesterday said it took "less than a second" for the tragedy to occur, and he believed the boy had escaped through a hole in the fence after his grandfather turned his back for mere moments.
He said Michael had most likely followed the family dog down to the dam, where he slipped into the water and drowned.
How are the mother and stepfather at fault?

As tragic as it is, fencing dams is a ludicrous suggestion, unless the dam is a house dam, close to the house & not a livestock dam.
Keeping a good fence around the house & yard with lockable gates, keeping an eye on your children at all times, yes it's difficult but it's the parent's responsibility to look out for their children.
Fencing dams?? it's the build another fence syndrome, been happening for decades, to prevent the carelessness of some to the detriment of all.

Did you see the fence? it was / is, in very poor condition. wire fences like that are useless, ๐ Laying blame will not bring the baby back... but it just might cause another family to have a look at their fences...or even this family, if they have other children. Stepdad mentioned filling in the dam but not replacing the fence.

Very sad .I feel for the family involved.
RIP Little one
In suburbia you have cars and people and other dangers associated with a young child roaming free away from their home.
In the Country you have other dangers ie;dams, lifestock, snakes .
In all cases the fencing around the house needs to be adequate and the child supervised.Things happen so quickly.

We have farm fencing with wire mesh.We never had a problem with our daughter getting through the fence and roaming ...I am pretty sure her brothers, had they been young when we moved here would have been different altogether.

Around the house? the fence is in very poor condition, witnessed on the video.

I didn't watch the video Az. Unfortunately stock standard farm fencing (even in good condition) won't keep a child in and they can disappear (from your side) so quickly ...in the brief time it can take a parent to hang a garment on the line.I know that happened a bit with all of mine .In the city farm fencing around a house would seem crazy yet it is taken as the norm in the country.I think that is what should change.

I did see the pic of the farm gate though...young kids can easily climb those.
