Vexed Vax Jabs Charted over Time in Database: Don't be k1oooless!

I was going to title this topic COVID vaccination rates and opening up at 80% (by the numbers) . . . but went with the one suggested by countess on another thread.

Please note that I am not starting this thread for the discussion of COVID vaccination, making vaccination mandatory or the pros/cons of vaccination.

This thread is also not for posting about 'early stage treatments' for COVID.  I may well report any such posts for being off-topic if they are made.

I won't be posting arguments for or against vaccination, just the numbers and percentages that will drive the easing of restrictions.

The intention of this thread is to provide an analysis of the figures that I haven't been able to find elsewhere.  It is for me to post screengrabs of an Excel spreadsheet that shows the double dose percentages that will become crucial in opening up the country.

I will prepare a spoiler so that members can see how the spreadsheet numbers are calculated.   The spoiler will also note the source I use for spreadsheet preparation.

If anyone notices any errors in my calculations or screengrabs then please let me know.

Re: Vexed Vax Jabs Charted over Time in Database: Don't be k1oooless!

🚨EVEN MORE IMPORTANT ALERT:

As of 9 September 2022, EVERY state and territory will no longer be reporting any daily COVID-19 statistics. This was agreed upon in National Cabinet with – apparently – the “endorsement” of the Chief Health Officers. I can only assume that the CHOs were bludgeoned (or heavily persuaded) into that endorsement, as the AMA certainly does not either endorse this nor consider it appropriate. If the Chief Medical Officer, Paul Kelly, truly thinks that this is a good public health approach, I consider that he is in the wrong job.

I don’t often make political statements in public. I’ll only say that this is clearly a political decision, not a public health decision, and that this is anything but “transparency”.

I am deeply disappointed in both federal and state governments. This is a cop-out; it is not in the public interest to refuse to release that daily information.

It also means that Reff can no longer be calculated – at all. Let me quote from Professor Adrian Esterman’s twitter account, posted on 8 September. _new-link.gif

Only 2 more days of daily case numbers, after which it will be weekly reports on Fridays. I won't be able to estimate effective reproduction number from weekly data. Clearly, the less information we give the general public, the less chance there is of them worrying about it!

His sentiments echo mine. There’s already increased apathy in the general public about COVID-19, in spite of high daily death numbers and in spite of variants continuing to emerge in the SARS-CoV-2 virus. There’s already low uptake of the vaccine doses required for people to be up-to-date. The government’s messaging has already been sending out the (false) information that it’s okay to be over this virus, and that we’re now living with the virus. (The truth is that we are dying with the virus and that many of these deaths are unnecessary with all of the tools at our disposal currently.) Now... with these attenuated data releases... it’s going to speed that apathy and “I'm over it” attitude even further.

The important public health and safety information about number of new cases and current number of active cases will no longer be available to enable individuals in every state and territory now to make informed choices about their lives.

I also said in a previous post here that “Not knowing how many cases are in hospital and in ICU will impact health workers across those two states, and fail to provide important information to the public.”

I am more than flabbergasted.

I’ll continue to report data as it becomes available.

Re: Vexed Vax Jabs Charted over Time in Database: Don't be k1oooless!

🚨ACTIVE CASES, DATA and Reff ALERT:

As of 9 September 2022, a reduced isolation period for active cases (from 7 days to 5 days) became effective.

As a result, the number of active cases reported in the data will reflect a noticeable reduction.

The states and territories are not completely aligned at this stage in how the new weekly data releases are timed. NSW, for instance, has switched to weekly data as of 9 September; so has TAS. VIC has released weekly data in the Chief Health Officer update, but has still published daily data for 9 September on its COVID data updates page (and on its Twitter page). QLD, SA, ACT and NT have published daily data for 9 September.

Daily data has therefore been calculated for NSW and TAS for 9 September.

This will be the last day on which I am able to present daily data for any state. Weekly data will be presented on 16 September.

NOTE: Thanks to a method explained by Professor Michael Fuhrer, I’m happy to report that weekly Reff can be calculated. I will present these calculations as the weekly data is released.
