Deb, I think there are alligators in southern USA, South America and some otheer places..
They look similar to our crocodiles but they are timid and will never bite if they can get away.
I have to tell you a funny story about the Seminoles who are very well respected., many of whom held high office includng the Chief of Police.
My mother and her sister visited me in Florida and I took them to the reservation to see the alligator show.
After the show my mother asked me if she should tip the Indian who pretended to 'wrestle' the alligator.
I said...No mum, that's Joe Oseola and he owns the biggest parking station in central Miami.

Monday's NRL clash between the Titans and Cowboys at Robina Stadium may have been won by the home team in an arm wrestle but it was a creature with no limbs which stole the show.
A three-foot brown snake slithered onto the grass between the playing field and the stands in the south-east corner of the stadium 10 minutes into the first half, sending fans fleeing to higher ground.
The game continued despite the lethal intruder's presence, with the snake eventually disappearing down a drain.
