WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

As soon as I saw my letters, I guessed this would be the answer. It came up once in octordle, I think it was, and it was one of the last ones I solved back then as I thought of it as a very English word.

I had a good day today with it.

After my first turn, I had 4 letters for #4, one of them green.

I still couldn't figure out what it could be. I kept trying to put one of the yellows in 4th spot, then 2nd. But I was determined to get at least one possible word before moving on.

Then instead of my usual eliminator, I tried one that is my 3rd. Today it was lucky.

After my 6th word, I was busy solving #3, then after that, I realised #7 had solved itself. All the greens were in place, just not in the same square.😁

After my first turn, there were still about 235 possible answers. Getting a vowel isn't always as helpful as having some consonants, I find.

But my second word was lucky, & knowing what letter could not go in second place helped.

It was pretty easy once I got going, but I didn't get going till turn 4 and I did make a mistaken guess at turn 5 (impel)

I started with SLAIN, and my 2nd row eliminator was DOPER. These were not the best start, but I had enough at least to guess bottom right and then 3R above that. (I see why you tried IMPEL.)

Of course I now had 2R and 1L (which couldn’t be anything else). I made a bit of a hopeful guess with 1R, at least partly because I hadn’t yet played a C. 2L now became easy to guess.

I was left with two words to solve… and here I can only attribute it to luck. 3L could have fantastic, but I made a weird guess instead. 4L might have been a collection of treasure, or a shady area within a wood, but I tried the past creation of a letter instead.

Once I had that green show up in second spot, there were not many choices left that could be the starting letter.

Spoiler
second word was 'usual'.

That 3rd wword along, I have lost count of how often I get 4 of the 5 letters but can't take a guess straight off as there are still so many variations that can be made with changes to the 4th letter.

Well, well, well.

This Wordle has exposed a significant flaw in the bot.

Wordle 973 3/6

🟨🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟨
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

I’ll explain in the spoiler.

Spoiler
I started with STALE.

The result showed that S wasn’t the first letter, so obviously it must be either of these:

(1)  _ SAL _    or
(2) _ _ ALS

I tried OVALS, and the bot flatly told me that although this was a “valid guess”, it couldn’t be the solution.

Presumably it would also have ignored / was also ignoring OPALS, GOALS, VIALS, and so on. Its conclusion is neither logical nor correct.

The final comparison table shows the same logical flaw.

OVALS, OPALS, GOALS, LOAMS - anything ending in S - seems to be discounted.

I started with STALE, and used CHOIR as my eliminator in the 2nd row. That gave me enough to take a guess at top left.

From there, I could guess 2R.

I left 2L because … yes, too many possibilities for the 4th letter. I looked at 3L; it was obvious what the 2nd letter must be, and that left K or P as the only 2 possible missing letters.

That word then gave me the information for 2L.

I turned my attention to 4L; that could have only one solution.

1R - by now I’d ruled out all but 2 possibilities and I made the right guess.

3R - another 50/50 situation. Again, I made the right guess.

I was left with 4R… and fortunately I had enough information to guess what it must be.
